Diamond question

My sister and I have inherited a ring which has two diamonds and an unusual design. I have always loved the ring and thought it was beautiful. We aren't sure who should have the ring and my sister suggested having a diamond from it each to make into a necklace to remember our family member. However I can't bring myself to ruin the ring and love it as it is. So I thought of maybe suggesting my sister have one of the diamonds to make into a necklace as she suggested, but that I keep the rest of the ring and then replace the missing diamond. But my question is, (finance aside), is it straightforward to replace a diamond in a ring or would I struggle to find a matching one? I would probably need to wait until I could afford it but wondered if it is an option? Thanks

If she is less bothered could you get it valued and you buy her half of the ring.

Thanks @autienotnaughty. We have had it valued and I could afford to buy her half but unfortunately she has said she would like something to remember our relative by which is why she suggested taking a diamond each to make into a necklace. I thought I could perhaps try to replace the diamond she takes though and that way I can keep the ring as it is. But I'm just not sure if it is easy to replace a diamond so that it matches.

You should be able to replace the diamond, unless it’s a very unique cut. Do you have a photo?

Take it to a jeweller - a local independent place though not a chain, they will source and matching one and set it for you.

Can we see it?

How old is it? Modern round diamonds are usually brilliant cut, or they could be the old fashioned cut, which would be harder to match. A jeweller who has their own workshop might advise if you can’t visit a jewellery quarter, say London or Birmingham. It’s really hard to say without seeing it.
