Will doing DD's hair in french plaits every day greatly reduce bloody lice infestations??

I haven't been well enough to go through her hair since Sunday, and today she is absolutely crawling (tis soooooooo embarrassing sending her to school full of eggs - I think I got all the live ones out now).

She has her hair tied back each day, but it is so fine it is normally just half bunches because full bunches/pony tail falls out or looks plain weird. 1/2 up or two full plaits is about the best I can do with it.

the plaits take a lot longer, but if it is going to help with bloody bugs then I will get up 1/2hr earlier each day and do it!!

HELP!

I am at the stage of throwing chemicals at her (which I have always been very anti - combing has always worked for us).

Oh poor you. Keeping it in plaits should help. Also I wash dd's hair in shampoo which has tea tree oil in which is also supposed to help.

southeastastra · 25/01/2008 08:34

diluted vinegar sprayed on it meant to help prevent them in the future too.

Chopster · 25/01/2008 08:35

nothing works for me I've been battling with it since last summer, every time I think I've got there it reappears. I have resorted to chemicals now, and it still isn't helping! what about a nice wide alice band or somehting? Anything that might cover the sides near the ears where they seem to get it worst. My dd is a pita and hates her hair up so normally comes home with it different to how I've done it in any case!

SSSandy2 · 25/01/2008 08:36

I'm sorry I don't think the plaits will help. If her hair is so fine and she does not yet have a great deal of it, would you consider getting her hair cut into a shortish structured bob. It wouldn't stop lice wandering onto her head but would be easier getting rid of any she already has IYSWIM.

turquoise · 25/01/2008 08:48

Do you condition her hair? Mine stopped picking them up when I started using a really slippy, shiny conditioner every wash (the pink l'oreal on eis good) and a bit of leave in conditioner too. Think it's harder for the nits to grip!

In conjunction with tea tree shampoo, constant combing obv.

mrsruffallo · 25/01/2008 09:02

I don't think that chemicals work either- just combing with conditioner. We have been dealing with this for ages now, I don't know w hat we can do

OriginalFlame · 25/01/2008 12:26

We don't condition as a regular thing, so I will start doing that.

Cutting her hair into a bob looks nice for a week, then she looks like she has been dragged through a bush backwards until next haircut time Getting them out of her hair isn't too hard, just time consuming making sure I have been through it thoroughly. Plus she is desperate to have her hair in a bun (like Psychogirl3), and she knows if it is too short for a ponytail, then bun-ness is even more out of reach.

Thank you

Wash her hair every night in the bath, condition massively and comb through with the nit comb in the bath.

theslownorris · 25/01/2008 12:37

Hiya,hope you're feeling better now.
The plaits will help because there is less loose hair flopping about IYSWIM and then less likely to come into contact with others. I would definitely give conditioner a go.The first time dd1 had lice I used chemicals that seemed to do F-all so I resorted to just combing and used a tea-tree conditioner. I used to put loads on and comb before rinsing. It also had the advantage of making her hair look fab .
So far, touch wood, the dt's haven't had them but I'm always on the lookout and right from the start they've had their hair tied back.

idlingabout · 25/01/2008 12:50

Just a tip on the conditioner; Boots sell a tea tree one (alternatives range) with a comb. You don't rinse this one out so there is the benfit of the tea tree smell which is meant to deter the lice.I would not use the plastic comb though - get hold of the 'nitty gritty' comb as it is really good for getting out eggs.

lucykate · 25/01/2008 13:21

my dd's hair is fine and very slippy (so slippy in fact that bobbles and slides fall out), tbh she was worse with lice when i used to tie it back than when it's loose. the only thing i can put it down to is that when loose, they can't get a grip, but when it's tied back, it's still, and easier to crawl into

we use tea tree shampoo and conditioner, wet comb once a week, a quick dry check every other day, no lice since october

FlameNFurter · 25/01/2008 13:22

Yup, we have a nitty gritty now The current system is conditioner combing every few days (except this week when I haven't been up to it), and me going through it completely with my fingers about twice a week - her hair is fair and it is really easy to just have her lay on my lap whilst I go through it chimp-style and pick out each individual egg.

donit · 25/01/2008 13:27

I used to do that, tea tree conditioner, nitty gritty etc, but never got completely rid of them, so after a week or so a few would be crawling around again. After many many month used hedrin and finaly did get rid of them (only for a few months though).
Hedrin can be used over and over again, no resistance.

CarGirl · 25/01/2008 13:36

after the trauma of last summer I discovered it was easiest to apply the conditioner onto dry hair, nit comb, then wash out. Made the process less stressful and quicker. Perhaps you need to contact the school as someone may not be treating them and constantly reinfecting her hence it never actually going IYSWIM

FlameNFurter · 25/01/2008 13:50

School sent letters home this week

WezzleWoo · 25/01/2008 14:06

Hi, I did his with my dd and it does reduce the risk but she did still get them.

One minute she would be clear and the next infested with them so I used to comb through her hair every sunday night in the bath just with conditioner to try and keep on top of them. This worked reaaly well.

Good news is as she got older she got them less - I think she was clear from about year 5 onwards.

BearMama · 25/01/2008 15:11

Can someone tell me why lice are such a problem in schools. Am pg with first child and tho I know its VERY common the idea that my little girl will come home infested horrifies me - I need to chill out and accept it as part of having kids I know!

IndigoMoon · 25/01/2008 15:13

we had a nit letter home. i am combing through her hair like a chimp everytime i can get hold of her. sadly i have not the foggiest what i am looking for but it makes me feel better
