Am umming and ahhing over whether to let dd1 (10) have an msn account. She hasn't asked me recently but that's only because I had previously said she wouldn't be having one. However, now her best friend has gone and got one and I think she will feel a bit left out soon. So - is it the devil pit of cyber bullying and internet not-safety that I am imagining? Or am I over-reacting somewhat .

As far i can tell msn is ok as long as you only give address to friends, but if some one you don't want talking to your dd1 gets hold of her address from somewhere you can put a block on the which prevents them from sending messages.i think that's how it works, but i'm new to computers so i'm not very knowledgable about them yet. my ds is 14 and has an account. I would let dd1 who is 8 have one but she doesn,t know anybody yet who has msn from school.

so long as she lets you monitor it she'll be fine
it is only people you give your email address to that can access you, and yes, you can block and delete contacts very easily

it eats your memory, makes your computer run slow and provides an enormous great hole for viruses.

Polgara2 · 21/01/2008 21:07

Senora Parsnip - really? Computer is slow enough already! Viruses - gulp!

well, it's not such a problem if you have decent anti-virus software, but it can be a way for viruses to get onto your computer since it's another thing that talks to the internet). This is true of all chat software, not just MSN.

They also all make your computer run slower though - you'll see.

your pc saves all the convos so you can check them if you feel the need. ds has it and he has had a few problems(mostly with his cousens!) I have just kept an eye on it.

Everything I know...its not called MSN anymore (I think). It is Windows Live Messaging .

My old computor doesn't like it and I havn't tried it on my new one yet.

Polgara2 · 22/01/2008 13:59

Do you know I actually knew that (that it was called Windows Live Messaging I mean) but I still called it MSN with a second thought .
