Whatever painkillers you have/have been given, you must take them as soon as you have the very first signs of a migraine, otherwise they won't work - your system shuts down.

If you don't get any relief this way, go straight back to your gp. There are migrain clinics, so you should be able to get some help.

  1. Take medication as soon as you think you will get one. DOn't wait until it has arrived/is in full swing.
  1. If migraleve doesn't work try a different one - syndol is good for some, others use cocodomol. I'm sure someone else will have more suggestions.
  1. Take medicines with a fizzy drink. The fizz helps them break down quicker and get absorbed quicker. If you can take disolvable tablets (though if you're feeling sick it sometimes is not nice).
  1. Keep diary of smells, foods, temperatures, weather, how regularly you ate, how much you drank, whether you had period, even TV/computer use. It will help you identify triggers to avoid.
  1. Have a look at this site might give you some more ideas.
  1. Depending on your triggers you could try relaxtion exercises/meditation - I've got some you can try if you want.

Common causes of migraine are hormonal, strong foods (cheese, coffee, chocolate are examples), strong smells, dehydration, not eating regularly, stress, tiredness.

thank you, i ve been trying sum of these inc another form of pain relief the doc gave called paramax? but sumtimes i literally aint got time to do sum of the stuff its really bad, i dont eat a lot of cheese or choc cos i ve been trying to eat healthy and all this was happening before and isnt any worse that i ve stopped eating them, and i ll have a coffee in the morning or din time but mostly tea or water the rest, i dont drink a lot of fizzy drinks cos of the healthy eating,

when i had it the other day my temp went up to 38.4

i also suffer with a lot of water/kidney infecs where my temp as been over 40 and in hosp i dunno if that has anything to do with it.

Unfortunately the best way to get through them is to knock yourself out and sleep through them.
Paramax is paracetamol right? You can take that along with Nurofen liquid capsules as long as you're not pregnant. Trick is to avoid pressed powder pills as migraines affect a nerve in the stomach which stops absorption. My GP prescribed me some tongue-melting wafers called Maxalt Melts.
Ask your doc to find you a better anti-sickness med than Migralieve so you can sleep. This is the thing you need to take ASAP before the stomach nerve spasms.
Re causes: I tend to get them after a stressful time. Because I'm pretty calm and good in the crisis, I'm obviously repressing something which has to come out once the stress is over!

bossykate · 21/01/2008 17:58

nonononono! don't mess about with paracetamol, nurufen, paracetamol & codeine! you need a -triptan type pain reliever such as imigran (available over the counter) or another of the triptan family (e.g. sumatriptan) available on prescription. they are the business! however, not best combined with cipralex, citalopram as the interaction causes d&v - nice.

you need to wheel out the big guns!

Magnesium supplements can help - you can buy from any chemist/health store. Take 500mg per day for a few months and see does it help.

Jbck · 21/01/2008 22:56

I second the Maxalt Melts but as they're pretty expensive my GP only issues a prescription for about 6 at a time. I did have a preventative tablet that you took all the time & acted on your brain in some way but it made me really drowsy & lethargic mentally.
I find head massage - like washing your hair in the shower helps, if you're not throwing up at the same time

Alambil · 22/01/2008 00:31

You can also ask the doc for some anti-sickness pills (metachlopramide I think). They keep the system going so normal pain relief (like nurofen) work.

I am a seasoned migraine sufferer - tried everything, then GP put me on these and it really made a difference (you take one tiny AS one and 2 normal pain killers - the result is magic )

jjmom · 22/01/2008 19:31

I agree wholeheartedly with bossykate! You need a triptan. I've suffered from migraines for years - they are the bane of my life.

I wasted years trying different types of mainkillers with limited results until I was prescribed a triptan (I'm presently on Zomig)and they are soooooo effective!!!

Other medicines just don't seem to compare.
But as others have said, you need to take it right at the first signs of an attack for them to be effective.

I find that within an hour of taking, I can be pretty much symptom free.

noddyholder · 22/01/2008 19:39

coke (acola) and syndol works and the codeine slows motility in the stomach and can stop sickness

SydneyB · 22/01/2008 19:41

Triptans! Definitely. Now available without prescription. Life changing I tell you.

claricebeansmum · 22/01/2008 19:42

I'll third Maxmelt

Wont go anywhere without them! Didn't know they were expensive...my GP has given me a repeat prescription - 3 boxes at a time

MicrowaveOnly · 22/01/2008 19:47

littlelapin the full fat coke thing is interesting. I get auras as well and I eat as soon as the dodgy vision starts, I grab whatever I can then lie down !!! It often never developes into the full thing.

I think it's due to low blood sugar for me.

Fan you need to work out your trigger it could be something subtle like lack of food or tiredness -do you skip meals?. Do you have any ideas? 2 days sounds truly awful, poor you.

biglips · 22/01/2008 19:50

my dp suffered from severe migraines for years and resulted him vomiting. it goes on for about 2 hours till his docs found him the perfect tabs for his migraines "Voltarol Rapid" (prescribed from his docs). It numbs the pains in his brain before it can managed to kick off so if he catches it in time adn take a tablet..hes fine.

Before he start using the Voltarol, he was on no tabs and was just putting up with it, he usually get a knife piercing thru his eye before the migraine kicks off and the vomiting is too sick for words!!!..

now he gets a niggly headache and takes the tabs...its 50mg too.
