Excessive noise from local nursery

First of all I have children and understand that they cry. Opposite my house is a nursery. When I moved here many years ago it was a couple of small rooms inside a residential house, but 3 years ago they built a large outdoor area. Since then the noise has been unbareable... screaming crying for a worrying amount of time. Its very residential here and a lot of us work from home. I have to shut windows to make a call.I called them and they said their policy is that the kids spend the majority of their time outside and they said they would keep an eye but couldnt have been less interested. Is there anything that can be done? Sometimes I get distracted at the long time the children are screaming for because surely thats not right and i wouldnt be happy if my child was that hysterical at nursery.
I know I sound miserable. I dont mind the sound of kids playing. Its the screaming crying thats driving me insane/I find concerning Any suggestions?

I don't think there is anything you can do really they probably spend a lot of time outside due to covid, what would you like to happen?

Is there a reporting body for nurseries where you live? Does OFSTED govern them? Where I am (in Canada) nurseries are quality-contrôled through our municipal government. I would be calling them to report any child welfare concerns. The noise is by-the-by, although frustrating I’m sure.

Yeah it might not be ofstead but must be something. Ive had a google.
Would there be a limit to how long they can be making the noise for just to have a break. I do think i need to say something to someone about the length and level of hysteria of the crying. Its distressing.

To have less screaming. But its unlikely isnt it. 😔

Yeah unlikely , although you might be able to complain as a pp suggested. I used to live next to a primary school and it is noisy.

Ofsted would not be remotely interested. You will have to go through environmental health. However, you may be too late. Were you given the chance to object to the expansion?

The noise of children playing can’t be helped, but screwing and crying for prolonged periods of time is not acceptable. It’s not fair on the neighbours having to listen to it and it’s not fair on the child that is left in distress.

OFSTED will deal with nurseries, so I’d contact them and raise a concern. Your local authority might be able to advise as well.

In your position I’d email the nursery, pointing out that you have already raised the issue on the phone and tell them that the issue is ongoing. Tell them that you have contacted OFSTED.

Keep a diary and wrote down the time of day and length of time that the crying is happening, and use your phone to record the level of noise and upset.

Thank you. Yes ill keep a diary and I do think I need to raise the concern about the crying, rather than noise. I dont mind the playing sounds too much.
Yes we did recieve something about their plans but I just thought it would be playing noise and where we live there are kids anyway. Its the hysterical crying for long periods.

If you have lots of kids then chances are that one of them will cry or scream. So what you are hearing is no doubt different kids screaming at different times! I think this comes under the heading of annoying but life. You need ear plugs.

Sswhinesthebest · 04/08/2022 15:22

I think there is supposed to be free flow at nursery but I’m not sure the children should be forced to spend the majority of their time outside, unless it’s advertised as a forest school or something. Read their prospectus. I’d be upset as a parent, if my child was outside all the time and screaming to go inside. There needs to be a balance.
