Bedroom lights

Our dd (now 3 and a quarter) could really use a light in her room for when she wakes on these dark winter mornings. Then she could read, use the potty etc when she wakes - and maybe let us sleep a little longer (she is quite happy to stay in her room and read for half an hour or more).

What do other parents do? At what age did you trust your child with a bedside lamp? What safe lights are there for a young child? Do you think one of those touch-lamps that turn on and off when you touch the lamp base would be ok (mains voltage)?

Any ideas?

ps. my dw says this is the most boring thread she has ever read

ooh harrassed dad - I can top that for tedium. Does anyone know where I could get a battery powered, low light lamp for ds's room - he's at that chewing on cables stage......

HarrassedDad, Ikea do some pretty safe lamps. The switch is on the cord, and the bulb is entirely covered, so they can't burn their hands on it. I trust DS with his, but he doesn't (so far) get out of bed to use it.

His room is entirely blacked out, so we need to get a weak light that he can get on easily, and that turns itself off, so he doesn't leave it on all night ... I'm tempted by one that turns itself on by sound, but the only thing I've found in that line turns out to play annoying tunes when it's in sound-sensitive mode, so we've given up on it.

What about putting a light above her bed a novelty one like this something like this or or something with a dangly string to switch it on - I used to have one of these above my bed to switch on and off- she won't be able to touch the bulb then will she

DSs have Ikea wall lights with a low energy bulb in them. They don't get hot and they can't touch the bulb. The blue star one is really quite dim but the yellow moon is brighter.

We have the touch ones. Got them from BHS - DS loves his and has had it since about age 3.5 - he doesn't like going to bed with no light on so has it on dimmest setting (which we then turn off later) then in the morning he quite happy touches it to turn it on. (Well now he's progressed to running to bathroom getting the stool carrying it back to bedroom to use to reach main wall light switch!).
Have a touch one in DD room which she can't reach (as she's only 1.5) but once she moves from cot to bed - probably at around age 2, it will be accessible to her.
