Planning on moving back to Edinburgh. DCs have English accents. Will they get the shit kicked out of them?

We lived up there for about 8 years and loved it, but were often surprised at the anti-English 'jokes' etc. Being old enough and ugly enough to look after ourselves this obviously didn't bother us, but I am wondering if DD (nearly three) and DS (18 months) are going to have a rough time when they start school.

why were they "jealous"

Swedes · 18/01/2008 10:47

Karen - It was the Highlands - West Coast. There were many good people too - some became and still are very dear friends.

NomDePlume · 18/01/2008 10:51

Swedes, that is an outrageous sweeping stereotype !!!

Swedes · 18/01/2008 10:54

NomdePlume - I know. But it is the truth - admittedly based on a very small rural sample so it should be taken in context. I'm sure Edinburgh is totally different.

Karen999 · 18/01/2008 10:54

I feel bad that you experienced this

But I am sure that you know that we are not all like that! Mind you maybe if I moved to the Highlands they would prob also see me as an incomer!! Hope it has not put you off ever visiting other parts of Scotland.....I can recommend Edinbugh

doggiesayswoof · 18/01/2008 10:55

Swedes - unfortunately some folk in the highlands feel that way about anyone else who moves to the area - including Scots from the central belt.

Not a nice post though.

nailpolish · 18/01/2008 10:56

i could make huge insulting sweeping statements about the english...

but i wont

NomDePlume · 18/01/2008 10:58

Naily, please don't ! We are a faultless, marvellous people

nailpolish · 18/01/2008 10:59

i like the english ndp

honestly

Swedes · 18/01/2008 11:00

Oh they were quite nice to fellow Scots and to a Welsh couple who took over one of the local hotels. The joke is that although I come from England and sound English, I don't have one drop of English blood in me (my parents moved to England - with my father's job - before I was born).

nailpolish · 18/01/2008 11:01

swedes you cannot judge a whole nation of people from one or two you met

and you know that dont you

NomDePlume · 18/01/2008 11:03

Now, the Welsh.......

hahahahahahahaha

Swedes · 18/01/2008 11:07

Nailpolish - During my 10 years there I met more than one or two people.

nailpolish · 18/01/2008 11:08

ok

Eliza2 · 18/01/2008 11:09

My husband is Scottish born and bred and doesn't have a Scottish accent.

He gets irritated when he gets the 'But you don't sound Scottish' comments and starts to do a Tony Hancock impersonation, something like this:

TONY HANCOCK: But you don't sound Scottish, doctor.

DOCTOR: We're not all Roy Roy, you know.

nailpolish · 18/01/2008 11:12

swedes

are you saying therefore that i am a fat alcoholic who is miserable, jealous and racist always moaning and greetin

Swedes · 18/01/2008 11:16

Nailpolish - Of course

snowleopard · 18/01/2008 11:17

In Edinburgh I think they'll be fine. There are a lot of English people here anyway and no shit-kicking that I know of. I have encountered anti-English feeling, jokes and possibly prejudice but it's more an undercurrent and a feeling sometimes, not overt and it's very rare anyway. I've heard of more serious cases (like Swedes') outside the cities and there was the England shirt incident, which was horrible but not the norm at all.... having said that there are some pubs I wouldn't go into and I did not let DS wear an England shirt his Nana sent him. But I don't think actual violence is very likely.

Habbibu · 18/01/2008 11:18

I'm English and sound it (well, in a slightly mongrel way these days), never had anything but friendliness and welcome for the 13 years I've lived here. When I go to London I feel hideously unwelcome and find many people rude, so I think of it must be what you're used to, and "reading" local habits and practices - I assume that the Londoners have no intent to be rude to me, but that my perception stems from a cultural difference. Or maybe they hate me.

Habbibu · 18/01/2008 11:20

snowleopard - plenty of pubs back home I wouldn't go into either!

snowleopard · 18/01/2008 11:22

Well yes but I mean besides pubs I wouldn't go into anyway!

(There's one in particular that is known for being unwelcoming)

snowleopard · 18/01/2008 11:22

opps the * * were meant to be on the besides

Piggy · 18/01/2008 11:23

I'm a Scot and have lived in England for 18 years and have no hint of a Scottish accent (never did tbh). I often get those "But you don't sound Scottish" comments. When I lived in London I used to reply "I thought all you Londoners had a cockney accent. Guv'nor". That usually did the trick.

pointydog · 18/01/2008 17:29

"miserable, jealous, maudlin, had terrible diets, had drink problems"

ahhhhhh. That's what I like about the scots

SpawnChorus · 18/01/2008 19:04

Wow - lots more replies! Thanks for all the feedback. The general consensus seems to be that it will be fine then

DH didn't get the job though He's going to start looking for more next week, so fingers crossed we'll still be joining the hordes of Sassenach invaders some time this year

(And Pointydog - ITA with your last post!!! lol)
