Electric vehicle charge points in lamp posts in residential streets

I've just seen an advert for Shell where they are talking about renewable energy and charging points for electric vehicles.
Naturally when more people start to move over to electric vehicles we will need many more charge points.
I did wonder to myself what would happen if it was decided that a lamppost in front of my house would be "the chosen one" for a charge point - it has its good and bad sides. It would be very convenient but if it was say, the only one for four miles and you constantly had people sat in their cars on your front it could get a little annoying- even though anyone has a right to park in front of anyone's house.
I have a hybrid that is not a plug-in so I don't know a lot about it at this stage but a quick Google told me this is being rolled out in a big way soon and as well as petrol station forecourts would look to include car parks and residential streets.
Has anyone been lucky/unlucky enough to have one near them?
By the way, I can honestly see the pros and cons to both sides of it. We are just a tad unlucky that our main living room is very visible off the street so I would probably veer more on the side of disappointment rather than cheering I suppose.

I saw that advert and wondered. I have a relative who has no off street parking despite insane house prices and I can't work out how they'll get charging points on that road. Not enough lampposts and a narrow pavement so little space for new charging-posts. It's already a parking scrum most days.

I don't have an electric car, but I live in one of these areas. Terraced houses, so hardly anyone has off-street parking. Some of the lamp posts have charging points, and some streets have one or two dcharging bays that are

(Mumsnet playing up tonight) I was trying to write dedicated charging points. You are not expected to stay in the charging bays when you are not charging your car, so it's tough if it's outside your house. There aren't charging points on every street, but there are probably 4 within 5 minutes walk. I don't know how long it takes to charge your car.

We had loads installed on the lampposts in my area. They are the trickle charge ones rather than fast charge so only really used by people in the area.
I don't have off street parking and would make me go full electric.

Where I live the council have painted lines on the pavements outside of houses for electric scooter parking. So some house just have a tangled pile of scooters outside.

Plant a hedge?

We have them along our street. Hardly anyone has a drive way so the on street parking is always full, so I don't know how anyone is supposed to charge their car there 🤷🏻‍♀️

They will bays for EV charging only, like in car parks.

They have been there a couple of years now and are just on a regular residential street with no bays marked out or other parking restrictions..

Doveyouknow · 29/06/2022 23:12

They are on streets near us. They are mostly used by residents who would be parking there anyway so it doesn't make any difference. They aren't fast chargers so people tend to charge overnight. I have never seen anyone waiting in the car for it to charge.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 29/06/2022 23:15

If they do this, it won’t just be one — that doesn’t stack up economically. They’ll do entire streets at a time. It’s the kind of thing that only works at scale.

FamilyGredunza · 29/06/2022 23:51

Ah yes I hadn't thought of them being trickle chargers so you're right it would be more of a park up and come back scenario.
I don't have an option of a hedge sadly and like I say it would be beneficial if we do go full electric with our family car. If they did the whole street and then said you can only use those bays if you are charging and it has to be kept clear if not, then that is interesting. Visitors to everyone on our street would need to park about five minutes away. Also households with more than one car would struggle.
I had imagined charge points would only be on peoples houses and at petrol stations but it sounds like we need more charge points than those options would provide.
