OP posts:
ComeOVeneer · 18/01/2008 18:23

Surrey, near Hampton court. 3 bed houses £1700 a month.

FlllightAttendant · 18/01/2008 18:26

Two bed detached, big rooms, medium garden, heating, dg, nice road (well nice enough!)

£600

but is private tenancy and no agent, long term so LL isn't bothered...that means he neglects it but hey...most places here are at least £700 for something anywhere near as big.

Grateful to be detached as nobody could hear me giving birth! (or shouting at ds)

I had to fix it up a lot though as it was a state - orange walls, red shiny ones in the kitchen, everything fridge etc broken (bought own) and no fitted units in kitchen.

Was very lucky to find it but I had to advertise.

Canterbury btw!

ComeOVeneer · 18/01/2008 18:32

Blimey my house would rent for £2800pcm

discoverlife · 18/01/2008 18:39

Herefordshire, lovely traditional english cottage with oak beams etc. 3 bed but with extra rooms like a sun room and a large annex. Half acre garden with stream and orchard. So £695 is highish for the area but a good price for the quality. Average for 3 bed is from £500 to £850 (that one comes with pool etc.) Oh. Private landlord.

Hecate · 18/01/2008 19:12

Derbyshire dales, 2 bed semi, smallish but useable front and back gardens and side bit, unofficial parking spot (it's a nice friendly street and we all stick to our own places!) £320 a month, which is for rent and water rates together. housing association.

Hecate · 18/01/2008 19:17

Oh, forgot to say, same house private rental is £850 a month. £530 a month MORE for the same accom. Why???

Vacua · 18/01/2008 19:26

do you have to pay for council houses then? I thought they were free?

nutcracker · 18/01/2008 19:42

LOL Vacua, did you really honestly think they were free ??

God, now wonder folk get in such a state about people living in council houses if some people think that they get them for free.

LIZS · 18/01/2008 20:14

Our old house - 4 bed detached 20 year old box on a close in Surrey - was up for rent for £1400 recently.

OrmIrian · 18/01/2008 20:17

Well I don't rent but I know that my friend pays 680 a month for a 3-bed modern house on a new estate. I'm in Somerset and not one of the chocolate-box bits

Marne · 18/01/2008 20:18

West dorset £460 for small 2 bed.

smeeinit · 19/01/2008 09:52

vacua....seriously? you dont really think you get council houses for free?

pukkapatch · 19/01/2008 09:55

yikes, where do y ulot live???
a two bedroom flat will set you back 900 a month easily over here.
dont even think about renting a larger hosue garden. it would be cheaper to pay mortgage.

noonar · 19/01/2008 09:56

brighton. we are buying a bed 4 house which is currently being rented (not by us ) for £1400 pcm.

itsahardknocklife · 19/01/2008 09:58

we moved from SE London where a 1 bed flat was £700 a month, to Yorkshire, where we pay under £600 for a s bed detached house in a nice area. Yay!

bluefox · 19/01/2008 10:00

Co Durham rented for eight months £595 per month for a tiny three bed box semi.

GreenGlassGoblin · 19/01/2008 10:05

6 years ago I was paying £410/month for a 1 bed flat in a (crummy) house conversion in Southampton. No garden, but there was parking. Dread to think what it would cost now.

elkiedee · 24/01/2008 10:54

I know people who live in council and housing association properties on £30K plus here in London. I still think it sounds like good money, as but it doesn't really go that far, particularly if that's the household income eg single parents or one parent staying at home.

I feel very lucky to have bought over 9 years ago in a then still fairly cheap area, I have some flexibility on mortgage payments with a current account mortgage but have stuck to paying in £500 a month as paying off my mortgage, plus using it as a short term savings account for money which will have to come out again but which I don't want to mix with day to day spending.

We will have a household income of c £50K next year but childcare and travel costs are also high - I will be paying over £600 a month to a childminder and that's very low for north London, and my travel is over £100 a month or £1,000 a year (annual travelcard is about the same as 10 monthly ones so I'll probably ask for another season ticket loan). I don't think I could manage the rents or mortgage payments a lot of Londoners mention here, or that a lot of people I know face.

thebecster · 24/01/2008 11:01

North London - We pay £1000pcm for 1 and a half bed flat (ie the second bedroom is big enough for toddler bed but not proper bed), 2nd floor walk-up, allocated parking. And we're on a REALLY good deal, because we're renting from a friend. We're saving up to buy somewhere out of london but commutable for DH...

Peachy · 24/01/2008 11:12

South wales- 15 minutes from newport, 30 minutes from cardiff

£595 for a 3 bedded cottage in a conservation area, huhge kitchen and bathroom. Fronts onto street, walled garden at rear. catchmebta rea for popular Church school.

Qute happy with that!

wantslotsofbabies · 24/01/2008 12:55

Central Highland Scotland- 4 bedroom farmhouse.
£400 a month £2222 Council tax.
Pro's- the scenery and a red squirrel at the window as I write.
Con's- snowed in, too expensive to heat, laird away to put rent up to £1000 a month, water has e-coli in it, neighbours are assholes, laird has shooting parties ,leaking roof, no double glazing, rats.

Fimbo · 24/01/2008 13:05

We have just finished renting a tiny 3 bed box with garden & garage in Norwich for £645. I think it would have rented for more if the doors/windows were double glazed and the 80's kitchen had a facelift.
