Telephone Scam

Not sure if this is true, but better to be safe than sorry.

We have been advised of a telephone fraud currently in operation (this applies to home and/or work telephones - land lines and mobiles):
If you do receive one of these calls, upon answering the telephone, you will hear a recorded message congratulating you on winning an all expenses trip to an exotic location. You will then be asked to press 9 to hear further details. If you press 9 you will be connected to a premium rate line that costs approximately £20 per minute. Even if you disconnect immediately, it will remain connected for a minimum of 5 minutes, costing around £100. The final part of the call involves you being asked to key your postcode and house number (which has other serious consequences). After a further 2 minutes you will receive a message informing you that you are not one of the lucky winners. The total bill will be £260.

Since the calls are originating from outside the UK, BT and other telephone companies are left relatively powerless to act. The only safe solution is to HANG UP before the message prompts you to press 9; even safer is to HANG UP on any unsolicited 'free offer' call. This appears to be a variation on a theme, warnings have been sent previously regarding calls made by individuals claiming to be engineers conducting a test on the line and asking for 9, 0# and text messages similar to the routine described above. DO NOT DIAL 9 (OR 9,0# OR 0,9#) FOR ANYONE! BT has been contacted and confirmed the details as being true.

There is another scam operating on Mobile Phones.
A Missed Call comes up. The number is 0709 020 3840. The last four numbers may vary but certainly the first numbers will remain the same. If you call this number back, you will be charged £50 per minute. People have complained about their phone bills, once they have realised the cost of the call but apparently this is completely legal. So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709.

Please pass this information on to your family and friends.

Thank you for the warnings RB! Dw had a similar sounding call recently but just hung up thank god!

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2004 11:58

Hoax, I'm afraid. I haven't found an exact reference for the first part, but the whole "dial 9" fraud is generally a hoax: snopes .

Realistically, the only way someone can call you and make your phone incur charges, is to call collect, which is a fairly clear process.

And the second part is also a hoax: 0709 scam .

Of course, there are plenty of premium line scams out there, they're just not as outrageous as these.

fence · 24/11/2004 12:06

I just don't get this - why would someone (not you, RB, whoever your source was) go to the trouble of warning us about a problem that doesn't exist?

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2004 12:25

I don't know where these hoaxes come from. They're like urban legends, they're good stories, people enjoy passing them on. Maybe they're modern folklore?

Almost everyone who passes these on believes them. I always check them at snopes .

Ronniebaby · 24/11/2004 15:15

I know what you are saying and I agree, but for every one of these hoaxes, we hear of about 5 genuine scam/stitch ups, and there are people out there gullible enough to do some of these things.

I like to be aware of them, even if they are scams, you never know !!!!!

My mum was called recently by a windows company who asked her if she had an option of getting free windows how many would she have..
She answered 250 please and hung up on them
Grr to all unsolicited phone calls.

Carla · 24/11/2004 15:45

I always answer 'none, thanks - we have leaded lights'. You can almost hear their jaw drop as they haven't a clue what you're talking about

bonkerz · 24/11/2004 15:47

WINDOW COMPANIES!!!!!!!!!

We had a well known company come round who had been advertising on tv that they will give the back windows free if we buy the front windows. I called them and asked for a quote on 3 windows and a door for the front of my house, a nice man came round and baffled me with science then measured up and gave me the price. when id looked at the quote i said it was fine and did he want to measure for the FREE back windows!! He looked shocked and tried to tell me i couldnt have back windows for free as the ad was wrong and there was no such promotion!! HE RAN FROM MY HOUSE!!

sweetheart · 24/11/2004 15:53

When they phone and ask if they can come and give us a quote I say yeah sure.

When they get to us I tell them I was only joking and seeing as they wasted my time I thought I'd waste some of their's

They never argue back - always too sheepish!!!!

Go on, everyone try it - maybe the companies will get wise and stop phoning!!!!

Gingerbear · 24/11/2004 16:39

We had junk calls and mail for ages until I registered with the mailing preference service. Hang on a mo and I will google for the details.

BTW, I was just browsing on the snope site and found this:

a programming advice and discussion web site he frequently called, Experts Exchange. "For a surprisingly long time, their address was www.expertsexchange.com. It now has a hyphen, www.experts-exchange.com."
The Experts Exchange site reportedly adopted a hyphen in their domain name after receiving a few too many queries from prospective patients seeking information about transgender surgery.

ROFL!!

Awww, Gawd. Feel all guilty about window company employees now. They're just cogs in a wheel ...
