Do you let the person at the supermarket checkout pack your bags for you? (bit of of a rant)

I prefer packing them myself and always say "no" if asked if I want any help. It's just so much quicker that way. Only time I appreciated help was when dd2 was tiny and screaming and I had to rock her while they packed my bags for me.
Today at Asda the woman at the checkout just started packing for me without asking, and then I'm too shy to say "I'll do it myself, thanks." So I let her do it, but it was soooooo slow. When she started to get one of those small plastic bags to wrap the already wrapped cheese and the I can't believe it's not butter before putting them into a bigger bag I had to stop her. They always seem to put so little items per bag, and do extra wrapping with little plastic bags, I mean what is the point? Madness, if you ask me.
Just had to get that off my chest.

Well said MandSWorker! But from a trolley to an express queue point of view, I was most annoyed when shopping in Morissons last week. I had a trolley full of shopping and carefully checked the signs above the tills to ensure i was not in the wrong place and queued up, only to be told it was basket only. Well the sign above the till didn't say that!

MandSworker · 24/11/2004 14:37

breeze, hasn't your store got a policy where you can only buy a certain amount?
I hate it when customers have a go at me because something is out of stock or if we stop selling it. for instance m&s changed their bistro stuff to gastropub and the amount of times people say "WHY" or have a go at me as tho i have the power to change a range of food!!

breeze · 24/11/2004 14:41

Most of the stock is on auto-rep, but we order the amount fruit, vedge and meat that we want.

You can never predict what amount you will sell.

breeze · 24/11/2004 14:42

and yes we had a list of stock that we can have and planogrames to state where to put them and how many facings etc etc.

popsycal · 24/11/2004 14:43

what abotu this one.....

I always get a trolley even if i am getting afew items.....as ds would run wild.

at our local asda they will not let me go in a basket queue if i have a trolley with say 4 items in....
is that fair?

bundle · 24/11/2004 14:47

M&Swoker, always try to be nice to cashiers as have worked behind a till myself and know what it's like...

breeze · 24/11/2004 14:51

popsycal, I personally would serve you, (although I dont work for asda) but I guess you would get some comments from the queue behind.

popsycal · 24/11/2004 14:53

tesco will serve me
i suppose i ought to put ds in the trolley and put a basket in the trolley with the food in

MandSworker · 24/11/2004 14:56

yeah I hate that too Jude, from a customer point of view and also cashier's. I also wish we can get some "THis till is closing signs" as I often jump on and off tills and have to tell customers i'm closing, they get cross and I can understand why as they have to walk all the way back with their shopping. i feel so bad i stay on longer and fall behind with my work.

Ronniebaby · 24/11/2004 15:00

M&S Worker and all shop people, I always treat people how I would like to be treated, which is why it annoys me when they dont even say hello, No I dont want a full blown convo, but a courtesy hello would be nice.

jude2105 - I know the feeling, I went to a Safeway (Now sort of Morrisons) there was no sign above the queue, the sign was at the side by the cashier (stupid place to put it), I had about 13 items in a basket, the cashier served me without a problem (as she could see I am pregn), and this nosey man behind me waited till I'd packed and was about to walk away when he made a comment. I just saw and flipped at him, gave him such a gob full I dont think he'll every comment again.

MandSworker · 24/11/2004 15:03

popsycal, what complete idiots!! If on an express, I go by amount of shopping not whenther they have a trolley. My post was about trolley full. I must admit i tend to be nicer to people with kids and/or pg women as i know how it is to shop with them. I even take them to their cars when i shouldn't really, i should call for someone in wearhouse.

breeze · 24/11/2004 15:03

My moan ~ I was once in a queue that said 5 items or less, I had 3 items, totally over £15 (booze) and when I tried to pay for it by card then said its cash only, and there was no sign other than that saying baskets only.

popsycal · 24/11/2004 15:05

m and s worker - i have both a toddler and am pregnant!
do you want to come and work up north!

Ronniebaby · 24/11/2004 15:08

Eh popsycal, lets share ;)

LunarSea · 24/11/2004 15:28

I remember once (late at night) being in one of our local supermarkets - the only tills open were baskets only (no I had a trolley), cash only (no I needed to pay by card), and self-scanned trolley (didn't have one of those either). No other people queuing, but both the cash and baskets people refused to serve me. Ended up just leaving my trolley full of stuff for them to sort out and walking out without it.

Other rant is people on tills waiting until after you've put all your stuff on the belt, and then saying "I'm closing now". A bit of foresight should let them tell you before you've queued for ages and unloaded things. Of course by the time you've put it all back in the trolley you're then behind all the people who were behind you.

lol@popsycal and ronniebaby!! I would love to
ronniebaby, lol bet he wont do that again in a hurry. i know what you mean about snotty cashiers tho, they dont acknowledge that you're there or worse still they chat too someone else and they make no eye contact and they give back your change or card and dont even face you grrrrr!! sometimes i wait and leave them holding out the change/card until they deign to look at me ( but only if i am bothered or in a strop lol)
Lunearsea, are they completley without a clue!! how rude, wish you complained to manager.
jura, lol!! i have to say m&s make quite a few mistakes too!!

Oh I just thought of another one,
people on the phone chattering away, ignore your greeting, let the stuff pile up, wait ages to pay, then gibe you the card/money, chattering on the phone all the way and make the queue pile up and not once acknowledge you're even there grrrrr

Ronniebaby · 25/11/2004 13:05

Never use the phone whilst at the checkout, if mine rings, then I either leave it, silence it or busy them out (soz if you'd called me and I've done that ) It is so annoying, could they just say (if I do answer mine I say I'm in the shops I'll call you back and cut them off) The only thing I do at the check out and its before I get to the belt, is check my mobi in case DH has text'd me to get something else etc.

codswallop · 25/11/2004 13:07
