What does an Inn-Keeper wear?????

Poshpaws · 23/11/2004 16:56

Have just picked up DS from nursery and they have informed me that he will be an Inn-Keeper in the Christmas Nativity play.

I'm quite chuffed about this as he has only been at this new nursery a week and I thought that they may not be able to find him a part.

Anyway, have no idea what the costume should look like - I thought it may be like a shepherd's!!???

Any ideas are welcome - need to have it made by beginning of December

How about a pair of normal trousers with a long kaftan type thing over the top, or a poncho. Just buy a long length of fabric and cut a head hole in the middle. Maybe with a leather belt?

Twiga · 23/11/2004 16:58

I think it would be similar to a shepherds, but you could give him a night hat instead of a tea towel and a candle to hold and a bunch of keys to hang off his dressing gown cord

pixiefish · 23/11/2004 16:59

...and a similar thing on his head tied round the forehead with a scarf of some sorts

Twiga · 23/11/2004 17:00

Shepherds always wore dressing gowns and teatowels when I was a nipper - just to explain my idea as realised might not make sense.

mckenzie · 23/11/2004 17:00

if you can wait until this time tomorrow I'll know for sure as DS is also the Innkeeper in the nativty play but the playgroup ladies have made all the children's outfits for them. He'll be having a fitting tomorrow morning though and i'll see it then.

pixiefish · 23/11/2004 17:00

Oh love Twiga's answer to the hat- like wee willy winky's hat

crunchie · 23/11/2004 17:04

Surely a fat belly T-shirt with beer stains on it and a fag in his hand that is the modern day inn keepers uniform anyway

beachyhead · 23/11/2004 17:08

He could wear some towelling beer mats round his head to show his profession!!!!

Poshpaws · 23/11/2004 17:10

crunchie.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I can envisage the costume now.

mckenzie, lucky you that the nursery are making the costumes. I am so crap at anything remotely craft-like, it is unbelievable.

Any more ideas welcome, but thanks for those already given.

Soak his outfit in a bath full of beer overnight and teach him to smoke for added effect

How dare they not give him the part of Joseph or Jesus anyway!

JanH · 23/11/2004 17:13

Would agree, same as a shepherd but IME shepherds are stripy and innkeepers are plain. DS1 was it at nursery and that's what he wore.

However, having said that, DS2 was the innkeeper in Y1 and he had a calf-length brownish striped tunic with a little black waistcoat thing on top - and a lantern of course. (Both outfits came from school's play costumes box - same ones get used year after year.)

You could possibly improvise with a long narrow woman's skirt (do you know any long narrow women?) gathered at the waist (neck) with armholes cut into the seams and then something else round the shoulders.

SoupDragon · 23/11/2004 17:15

A timely thread... from what I can gather from DS2 (3 3/4) he's lead shepherd in his nativity play.

Easy · 23/11/2004 17:16

Just so long as this doesn't happen.

Mary and Joseph arrive at the inn. Joseph knocks on the door (which nearly falls down), and asks "is there any room at the inn?"
To which the inn-keeper replies ......

"yes, come in"

That stops the show.

SantaFio2 · 23/11/2004 17:16

leather jeans and a white frilled shirt

Poshpaws · 23/11/2004 17:17

I am in total agreement with you of course, TC, but must be gracious about it .

Thanks MNs', keep the ideas coming!

LOL Easy, and in fact at most of the posts on here

JanH · 23/11/2004 17:19

fio, what sort of inns do you frequent?

Poshpaws · 23/11/2004 17:19

Oops, I meant about the part in the play, not about smoking and smelling of beer.

Although, there's an idea.....

sarah, LOL at !!!

How old is he? Quite little? I have seen sheep dressed in cream woollies and tights, with little sheepy ears on a headband, and a little sheepy tail tucked in at the back - would he stand for that?

sarah77 · 23/11/2004 17:42

He's 6 and that sounds like a good idea - much easier than me actually crafting a sheep suit from some woolly material. Anything for an easier life last year he was a shepherd and they come as standard with tea towels on head and a sheet tied round the waist with a bit of cord - simple. I s'pose being a sheep this year will broaden his acting abilities

sarah77 · 23/11/2004 17:46

... although I'm not so sure about how cool wearing tights at 6 would be ....

pixel · 23/11/2004 19:08

Bloomin' cheek! My dh doesn't smoke or have a beer-stained t-shirt! (all right he's got the fat belly, I'll give you that)
