I'm pretty sure it's Finnoughla, but can only find Fionnula on the web. It it possible it could be the former?

TIA

I haver seen it as Fionnualagh as well

I think Fionnula is the "proper" spelling though

But I could be wrong!

belgo · 13/01/2008 07:35

I also think Fionnula is the right spelling, or possibly Fionnualgh as Sheik says.

Walnutshell · 13/01/2008 07:39

How do you pronounce that then?

seeker · 13/01/2008 07:40

Fionnula is the right spelling.

But remember if you've had to look up the spelling and you're still not sure, your poor dd will have to spell her name every single time anybody asks her her name for the rest of her life! And speaking as someone who has to do this, it's really , really boring.....

tartanandtired · 13/01/2008 07:43

Hi - I've also seen a colleague at work spell it as Fionnuala - which would also make since as Nuala is a name on it's own.

As far as I know it's pronounced as Finn-oo-la?

Walnutshell · 13/01/2008 07:45

What, you have to spell s-e-e-k-e-r every time? Gosh people are dim

2sugarsagain · 13/01/2008 07:45

Thanks everyone. Seeker, it's not for me, it's for a party dd's going to this morning. So, it seems even if I add the 'g' I've still got a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong.

WNS, Fin-ooo-la. At least that's how dd's friend pronounces it!

Seeker, I've been there too - had an Italian maiden name! The funny thing is, now I'm married and have a very English sounding name that's spelled as it's pronounced, people STILL ask me to spell it, and when they don't they STILL get it wrong!

this is when a party invitation written on paper would be useful

twelveyeargap · 13/01/2008 07:48

Hello

The modern Irish spelling is FionnuAla. You missed an A there. Nuala is a short or Anglicised version of Fionnuala.

The OLD Irish spelling is Fionnghuala, which is I think where you got your first version in the OP.

Other modern/ Anglicised versions are Finola and Finella.

(I have three Irish baby names books in the house, and all are agreed on the above spelling.)

Walnutshell · 13/01/2008 07:49

It's a nice name.

I prefer this spelling: Fionnuala - but my preference isn't really relevant is it?

2sugarsagain · 13/01/2008 07:51

So, Fionnghuala is what's going on the card and prezzie then! I shall take a sneaky look at the other cards when I drop her off and wince audibly if I've got it wrong!! Thanks!

Oh yes, and it's pronounced Finn-oo-la or some people would say Fionn (fyun)-oo-la.

That's either the Fionnuala or Fionnghuala spelling. The gh would be silent, hence the change in modern spelling.

seeker · 13/01/2008 07:51

I know - you wouldn't believe the spellings I get. Sieker, Seaker, Ceeker, Seekagh, Ciekagh, Pseeca, Seekre, Ceecr, SSeekr, Seecough.......

2sugarsagain · 13/01/2008 07:52

LOL belgo!! Totally agree.

OP posts:
seeker · 13/01/2008 07:54

And I knew how to spell Fionnuala - I just can't type. Grrrrrr!

2sugarsagain · 13/01/2008 07:54

Pseeker? Sechaar? Ciaca?

OP posts:
seeker · 13/01/2008 08:01

Oh, I like Ciaca!

SheikYerbouti · 13/01/2008 08:04

As someone who has a DS with an Irish name (Eoin) we get it spelt Owen, Eion, Eeon, Euan etc on cards, and we don;t really mind, just find it mildly amusing

Walnutshell · 13/01/2008 08:51

Seeikah you are becoming more glamorous with every new spelling!

seeker · 13/01/2008 09:30

The list of spellings of my name is starting to read like the Reception class register in ds's school!

Walnutshell · 13/01/2008 10:28

Smirk.

Yes, you are somewhere between Kyylie and Zohie. Cool.
