Chippenham, Marlborough area – what's it like to live round there?

We've been vaguely thinking about the possibility of moving out of London (mainly because of the schools thing) and we both have family in Wales and the Southwest, and now an opportunity has come up in this area for dh. It always looks very pretty when we drive through this part, and Bath and Bristol both look attractive ? but what's it actually like to live there? I'd really appreciate it if anyone can offer any insights/advice.

TIA

hi, as coddy says I do live around this area. I live in a tiny village, 20mins from chippenham, 20 mins from marlborough, 10 mins from the M4. I like it because it is properly rural, but incredibly easy to get to bristol (30 mins drive to city centre, 25 to Cribbs) and london (1hr30 min drive to hammersmith/kensington). I do go to london for dinner/theatre and drive home sometimes - it isn't too bad. Key is to be near the M4 (for north wilts, A303 for south).

As distracted says, chippenham is fine but not too exciting as a town itself, but there are some very nice villages around and the train station is commutable to london (hour and 10). it is a lot cheaper than bath or marlborough, that is generally why people end up there. partly because bath and marlborough are such nice towns, partly because it takes a bit of time to get to the motorway from chippenham, it isn't quite so convenient. marlborough is really lovely, I shop there a lot even though it is v small (waitrose, excellent butcher, bookshop, baby shop, boots, great cheese shop, lots of nice boutique-y places, couple of good restaurants, you get the idea.). There are some really nice villages around marlborough as well. from there you would get the train from swindon probably (although pewsey is an option) - swindon 20 mins away, M4 10 mins away. Swindon a much better station to commute from than chippenham as trains take 55 mins and there are twice as many of them (every 15 mins). downside of that is that the season ticket costs 2ce as much.
Swindon's train station is about the only thing to recommend it, but it is useful to have there I guess for the usual high street stuff - argos, M&S, carphone warehouse, also has every main car dealer, etc. I go there infrequently I must say but it is very user-friendly, drive in, park, do everything in one ugly big mall, and go. Also has an outlet centre which is OK (useful big gap).
god this is long I'll stop now!

Thanks, Distracted and PPH, that's all really interesting. When you talk about trains into London, are we talking Paddington for Chippenham, Swindon, etc? Am I right in thinking you can only get direct trains to Waterloo from further south in the county?

I live in Gloucestershire, but work either in Chippenham or Swindon. In fact, I work in a tiny village near Chippenham, which is very pleasant! Not too keen on Chippenham itself as I always seem to get stuck in traffic, but it may well be fine otherwise (don't want to offend anyone). I actually quite like Swindon for working, everyone I've worked with is very down-to-earth and friendly. There are some OK places to live (eg Old Town) and shopping is very convenient (although as pph says not very glamorous!!) Good luck with your move!

princesspeahead · 23/11/2004 22:51

yup, chips and swindon go into paddington as does pewsey. salisbury and s wilts I think are waterloo and much slower (commuter trains, not fast intercity)

zubb · 24/11/2004 09:29

you could use Great Bedwyn station from Marlborough as well, goes to Newbury / Reading / London. Not sure how long it takes, and they are less frequent than from Swindon, but gives another option - and a nice drive through Savernake forest.

I grew up in Devizes (hi Distracted!) and liked it enough at the time but now I would find it too remote and slow-moving. It was good for children though - lots of freedom and enough things to do.

MistressMary · 24/11/2004 10:27

I was born in Devizes and lived in a village not too far away from there.
I live in Melksham now, not so attractive!
Rubber factory and at the last count 17 takeaways!
However it does us and quite happy here.

littlerach · 24/11/2004 10:27

I worked in a village very nr you MM!

MistressMary · 24/11/2004 10:29

Ooh where.
I used to belong to an agency and care for the old folk at homes in the town and villages around the place.

Fennel · 24/11/2004 10:31

mistressmary did you go to school in Devizes? would I know you?

MistressMary · 24/11/2004 10:35

Im 33 now and was there 1982- 87.

ragtaggle · 24/11/2004 11:35

Codswallop? We went to the same school - dying to find out when you were there or would you prefer to remain anonymous?!

Distracted · 24/11/2004 11:46

Hi Fennel and MistressMary - did you both go to the secondary school in Devizes? If so, what was it like?

MistressMary - you really are just down the road from me! What village did you use to live in near Devizes?

Sorry - just being really nosey!

Oh Frieda - you can get trains to Waterloo from Trowbridge and Westbury. I think it's a much slower route but also much cheaper (seems to cost a fortune to go from Chippenham). In terms of cost I think Pewsey is much cheaper than Chippenham and I know a few people who commute to work from there, but there are fewer trains (something like one train per hour during rush hour times, so if you miss it you're very late).

MistressMary · 24/11/2004 12:26

Rowde here.
Devizes school? Horrible place.
Mr. Williams was headmaster at the time I was there.

Distracted · 24/11/2004 13:51

Rowde seems nice, I know a couple of people who live there.

Not good memories of Devizes school then! I just wondered as a couple of people I've met who grew up here have said they hated it and I would like to stay here until my children are through school. Lots of choice of different primary schools but there's only 1 secondary school.

Fennel · 24/11/2004 14:30

I was at Devizes school 79-86 (so I'm older than mistressmary, 36, I guess I wouldn't know you). I didn't hate it, it seemed a reasonable enough school but I bet it's changed a lot now. Mr Williams was indeed a horrible headmaster but he must be long gone now.
academically it used to be good enough, eg I went to Oxford Uni afterwards and my sister went to do medecine. It really is difficult to say though as that's 20 years ago now.

are your children in any of the primary schools Distracted? my dm is a governer of southbroom juniors.

Distracted · 24/11/2004 21:25

No my children aren't even at primary school yet. Dd will start school in 2 years - we did previously live in the catchment for Southbroom infant and juniors, but moved this year and children will go to Wansdyke school.

Am a bit worried about the negative things I hear about Devizes school, but am being a bit silly I suppose as it's years and years until my children will be going to secondary school! Glad you think it was ok academically.

MistressMary · 24/11/2004 21:27

I didn't really do well there as I was quiet and sort of picked on for it and other things.
But I did do well in the last two years though, to be honest.
Got my City and Guilds in care.
No, Only school in the area unless you are talking Dauntsey??

codswallop · 24/11/2004 21:28

subs · 24/11/2004 21:54

i live in bristol, and absolutely love it... is very small in lots of ways, beautiful and diverse. propertry is expensive though, and same social probs as all major cities

Fennel · 25/11/2004 11:03

I would love to live in Bristol if I was going back to the SW.

Distracted I'm sure parents of children at school now can give you a far better idea than my memory of the school 20 years ago. (now I feel old).

Wansdyke was a very nice school - it's near where my parents still live and certainly back in the 80's was probably the best choice in devizes (it hadn't opened when I started school or I'd have gone there too).

Distracted · 26/11/2004 19:51

Thanks Fennel and MistressMary. You're right, current parents would give me more of an idea, but I don't know any yet and it's still interesting to hear of past experiences.

I'm certainly not talking Dauntsey's that's for sure (£12,000 per year per child)!

I think Wansdyke is still one of the best primary schools in Devizes, it is certainly popular, usually over subscribed, so I'm glad we now live in it's catchment area. Just don't have the same choice of secondary schools.

MistressMary · 26/11/2004 20:06

12,000 a mere snip.
Blimey!
Hope you hear some more positive things of Devizes School now then, eh?
