What does a 6 month old wear to go swimming?

Yes, I know a stupid question! My dd is starting swimming classes with me this week and I'm not sure what she should be wearing in the pool. I've seen disposable swimming nappies in the shops - does she wear a swimming costume on top of that? Would normal nappies work or would they leak? I have no idea!!! Does anyone have any recommendations for a 6 month old? Thank you!

a swim nappy, disp or not

SoupDragon · 22/11/2004 20:25

The classes I use insist on a disposable or reusable topped by a(nother) reusable. What you wear ontop of that is entirely down to your sense of fashion.

Do not use a normal nappy - they swell in the water and disintegrate.

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 20:25

My DD used to just wear a reusable/cloth swim nappy. I didn't bother with swim suit until a bit older - or if pool was very cold. But then I always took a towel poncho or her dressing gown down to pool side to wrap her in every so often - for warmth.

Normal nappies would soak up way too much water. Never used th e disposable swim nappies though so don't know how different.

The swim nappies are designed to keep only poo in BTW.

Hulababy · 22/11/2004 20:26

Two nappies Soupy???? Why do they insist on that?

SoupDragon · 22/11/2004 20:26

Oh, a swimming costume is useful as it makes your baby less slippery.

codswallop · 22/11/2004 20:26

is very posh where she is

skipster · 22/11/2004 20:27

My dd wears just a swim nappy on its own - got it from Mothercare for about £6.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2004 20:28

Because they get fined £1000 for "fouling" incidents, Hula, and risk losing the use of the pool. Some people use nappies that would clearly hold nothing in at all, you can see them gaping at the legs. The "double wrapping" is meant to stop this.

NomDePlume · 22/11/2004 20:28

My DD wore one of those little swimmers ones from Huggies for swimming, nothing else.

codswallop · 22/11/2004 20:29

bloody hell its like "stalag luft soupy" at yours

SoupDragon · 22/11/2004 20:30

Not at all Coddy. Just that some people were irresponsible and it cost the company a fortune!

codswallop · 22/11/2004 20:30

have htey ever actually done this?
how would they enforce it?

"madam is this yours"? < holds up lump of poo>

WestCountryLass · 22/11/2004 21:57

Mine have always had reusable nappies. With DS he just wore the nappy but with DD I have bought her a cossie, just cos she looks cute in it!

lydialemon · 22/11/2004 22:05

DSs used some lovely Aquanappies, that looked like a pair of bermuda shorts, DD has a swim nappy from Mothercare which is fine. In all the time that I've taken mine swimmimng though, none of them have ever pooed whilst in the pool - I always figured the cool water 'inhibited' them.....maybe I've just been lucky?!

Maiakins · 22/11/2004 23:45

Yikes! I do hope there is no poo-ing incident! Thanks everyone for your tips. I think I'm going to play safe and buy some disposable swim nappies and put a cossie on top! Thanks also Hulababy for your tip about the towel poncho or dressing gown.

Have a friend who took her ds swimming on holiday in normal nappy. It absorbed so much water that he sank !!! We used Aquanappies (with a cossie ove the top for dd cos it looked cute ) and only had a poo incident once with dd as we were leaving. Friends' kids did it all the time so she used the Huggies disposable ones.
