Could I ask about storing deeds to a house please?

Hi. Regular lurker, but not a regular poster.

Please could anyone tell me about storing the deeds to a property? DHs uncle has recently died and we have inherited his little flat, which we may sell or rent out. I have a feeling we shouldn't keep the deeds at home. Could anyone advise on what needs to be done?

Thank you.

You could ask your bank to store the deeds for you or your solicitor would do it. You need to check charges first.

Have you seen a solicitor when you inherited the estate. Perhaps the could keeps the deeds in the Deed cabinets for you. Otherwise there is no reason why you can't keep them (so long as you don't loose then)

You can leave them with a solicitor, who usually has a fire-proof box for such items. However, deeds are a lot less important now as all details are kept at the land registry, so keeping them at home is not such an issue.

Oops sorry. Don't know how that ended up on this thread. Wierd!

Deeds are held electronically at the Land Registry once the property is registered, so there is no need to worry about their storage. As the property is changing hands even if it wasn't registered before it will be now.

Gone are the days of paying someone to look after them

Many thanks Oogs and all wise Mumsnetters. (What did I do before MN?!)

I may pop in and tell the man at my bank, who wasn't sure what they charged, but knew it was very expensive to store deeds with them, and said it was probably worth looking elsewhere! Shame for the poor people who are still paying lots.

That's interesting, I was wondering this myself. Power of mumsnet!
