Suddenly getting phone calls for someone I've never heard of - should I be worried?

Probably sounds daft but for the last week I've been getting calls asking for a Mrs Penman. We've had this number for the last 7 years & I know that Penman isn't the name either of the people who had the number before us or the lady who used to own our house. The calls have come from a few different companies & I've asked them to tell me what number they called & it is mine, not just a wrong number.

Am a bit worried that someone's using our details. Does it cost anything to see your credit file & how do I go about it?

Couple of quid I think.

Also check the electoral register, make sure there's nobody else listed on that.

Dh gets this regularly from a school in Leeds looking for a Mrs (it sounds like ) Kahn. It's his mobile they phone though. he has asked them to tell this Mrs Kahn that she has given teh wrong number but tehy insist it's correct. However, no else ever calls his mobile looking for her.

Get your telephone provider onto it, tell them you keep getting hassled by companies looking for someone who doesn't and never has lived there. it costs £2 -£3 to get a creidt file I think

what are they calling about, maybe a number has been added to a web site that is wrong.

Ask them what they want and where they got the number from next time.

Type your number in to google

It's all been sales calls. I did ask the caller today if she could find out where they get their info from but she said she had no idea.

Will look into getting credit file reports.

Thanks folks

when I fill forms online I often make up a phone number, as I don't want to give mine out, but usually you have to fill in the box. I imagine someone has done this, and has just made up the number to stop any bothersome calls. (it's not me, by the way!)

I see what you mean with all that child beneit hooha...just keep an eye on your bank account just in case!!!

register with telephone preference service as well - then it is illegal for companies to cold call you.

You can do it online at tps.com

But agree with checking out the electoral register and credit check thingy, just to make sure.

I'm often getting calls for Mrs Penman!!!! Have done since I moved to this address 10 yrs ago, and these have persisted inspite of registering with TPS. I've never had any suspicious activity on my bank account, though.

I do that as well Go! And I think it sounds like this might be what has happened.

A long time ago I had the same problem as the OP and I eventually asked one of the callers where she had got the number from and it was from a carrier bag advertising a new local company. The number had been printed incorrectly. I contacted the company who were really apologetic but cheekily asked me to pass on their correct number to any callers in future!!
