Magazine junkies?

I've noticed in other threads how lots of us seem to be pretty up on stories from the weekly and monthly glossies. I know I've got a major magazine habit - how about you guys?

This is the list of all the mags I buy each month:
heat, The Week, Marie Claire, Elle, Vogue, Red, InStyle, Glamour, Zest... and that's just the regular ones. When I've run out of those I might succumb to Harpers & Queen, Cosmo, She, OK or whatever the newsagent happens to have left on his shelves by the time I've finished. I can't help myself, I'm addicted! I love the feeling of opening a brand new glossy and dipping into its pages for the first time. Arggh, am I the only one with such a pathetic addiction??

Practical parenting and Mother and Baby on subscription. (4 years ago it was every bridal magazine!)
Alss buy Glamour, heat, Good Food every month, and occasionaly others. At 28 and with a baby I am slowly and sadly coming to realise I am not Cosmo or Company girl anymore

bunny2 · 29/10/2002 18:36

I am embarrassed to admit I buy Woman and Womans Own as a treat. Dh is out with the men tonight - his first night out in months, bless. So I have treated myself to these mags. I am really looking forward to putting my feet up for a good read - have I bypassed my thirties and sped straight into my fifties? I use to buy every mag on the market but since ds was boarn I dont really have the time to read much, OK magazine is a definate though, every week.

monkey · 29/10/2002 18:59

I love woman too (but hate woman's own). Unfortunately you can't subscribe, so I can only get it a couple of times a year - hense the mumsnet addiction

ellasmum · 29/10/2002 19:03

I am dedicated to Heat and OK every week - used to be Hello too but realised that I didn't know any of the people in it ie. not trashy enough.

Also will read Elle, Glamour and all the other chunky monthlies.

Zoe · 29/10/2002 19:05

I buy heat every week, and I subscribe to Red, which I think suits my age and lifestyle well - too old for discos, too young for SAGA holidays - I also read eve, Marie Claire and OK sporadically and often buy Real as it is only £1.50, plus I can slip it in the supermarket shopping, hee hee! Anything else that takes my fancy really!

JoAnne427 · 29/10/2002 20:42

Vanity Fair, Fine Cooking, Cuisine and Better Homes & Gardens...all delivered at home, often left unread! Have two Vanity Fairs that have yet to be opened!

yikes - what a dork! Look at that list of "I no longer have an adventurous, crazy lifestyle" magazines!

WideWebWitch · 29/10/2002 20:46

I'm a complete magazine addict and have been for years. I like Eve best but also buy She, New Woman, Red, Company, Cosmo (sometimes, always hate myself afterwards) and Marie Claire. If I've read everything I might get desperate and buy Real, B and Hello for a quick fix. Or Elle if the cover's good, although it irritates me (mainly via overuse of the word fashionista) and OK, Now and Heat depending on who's on the cover. Also get Toddler sometimes and used to buy M and Wipe when they were around (both parenting mags). I did realise ages ago that I am too old to be the target market for Cosmo and Company etc but I can't stop myself buying them. It's very often an unsatisfying and empty experience though: I don't need to know how to get a boyfriend/have an orgasm/ask for a promotion etc. I thought Red started promisingly but just hasn't delivered over the years - it's gone a bit coffee table book Vogue-ish and I'm not particularly interested in Ruby Hammer's or (substitute glamorous successful semi-famous woman here) house and lifestyle. Their features seem to me to have got fewer and fewer. Have to say though that this week's Heat certainly delivered on the "oh my god, how awful does she look?" front - terrible picture of Liz Hurley, most enjoyable!

MandyD · 29/10/2002 20:53

I used to be a magazine addict: Take a Break & Bella every week, several monthlies, all the Mother & Baby and parenting ones, but I still felt what I wanted to read wasn't there. THEN I discovered Mumsnets (plus 2 other parenting sites!) and haven't bought a magazine since. I have to go halves with DP on the broadband charges, but I still think I'm saving a lot of money!

Alibubbles · 29/10/2002 20:54

I subscribe to Eve, Good food, Good housekeeping, Marie Claire, Natural parent, Nursery World, Nursery Education, Junior (Shhh) and buy She, Woman and Home, Tatler and Harpers and Queen!

The subscriptions were all due to an amazing offer on emagazines.

p.s I always buy Readers Digest at the airport!! Great for plane journies!

Alibubbles.

Why Junior(shhh)?

Alibubbles · 29/10/2002 22:24

Wills, some people think that Junior is a really posey magazine, with perfect children in perfectly expensive clothes and all go to private school. I love the magazine and it has some very interesting articles.

I remember Wipe and was disappointed that it folded, another new one out that I am waiting to see if there is a second issue of is Parentwise

Wills · 29/10/2002 22:27

Alibubbles - I'm in total agreement with you over Junior. The cltthes they advertise are stunningly expensive but I really enjoy their articles.

Wills · 29/10/2002 22:28

I don't appear to have the ability to use the keyboard tonight - appologies

Marina · 29/10/2002 22:42

WWW, Sobernow - I remember Wipe with affection. Did you know there is a book out now which anthologises some of the best articles along with Penny's wit and wisdom on being a single parent of a child with a disability? I will look out for Parentwise - I do find Junior trying at times.

kkgirl · 29/10/2002 22:47

I haven't heard of Wipe but I liked M and was really disappointed when it folded. Junior is OK but not as good. What is parentwise like

Catt · 30/10/2002 10:17

Aha, there's a whole world of untapped magazines out there for me! I obviously need to add Junior and other parenting type titles to my list.

I really relish my mag reading time. When I had my first baby (2.5 years ago) for the first few weeks I thought I would never have time to read anything ever again. All the long b/feeding sessions were accompanied by Radio 4. Then with my second baby feeding and glossy mags became the order of the day and now my habit is greater than ever. Sometimes I feel there aren't enough mags out there to keep me satisfied the whole month! For the last few days I've been waiting impatiently for the December monthlies to come out - come on Red, Marie Claire, I'm waiting...

I could probably buy Posh's Gucci wardrobe with the money I spend on this stuff. Did anyone see them last night on Channel 4 by the way??

Don't know whether to be sad or happy about this...I've not even heard of some of these mags, let alone ever read them. My only subs are to New Scientist and Cycling Plus; I occasionally buy Outdoor Photography, Wildlife, Good Food, or house magazines when I'm looking for decorating inspiration. Obviously I'm either some sort of nerd or just not girly enough .

Have always loved buying the American version of Cosmo though, when I see it at airports - very different from the UK way of looking at things and therefore v. entertaining!

sis · 30/10/2002 13:06

Last XMas, dh got me a years subscription to Oprah(at my request) and I have to say that it is one the worst magazines I have come across. I hate the style of writing and the old fashioned layout (feature articles start on one page and are continued in a big pile at the end of the mag).

Eve, on the other hand, is brilliant and She comes a close second.

bundle · 30/10/2002 13:13

Wipe??? what a fantastic name, sorry I missed it. I read so much serious (science/medicine)stuff at work I've reverted back to ridiculous things like heat, Hello! etc and I'll even own up to the odd Woman's Own but I really like the features in Marie Claire and Red has interesting bits but I don't rush out when there's a new one. I really like the 'nice bit' of the Guardian on Sat and Observer ie the bits with shiny paper and pictures in..while dh reads dull things about ISAs and opera reviews.

grommit · 30/10/2002 13:15

Eve is really good - not too youn/not too old - between Marie-Claire and Good housekeeping.
I must also admit to buying 'Heat' and very occasionally when feeling desperate 'Now'...I used to have a brain once (pre kids)

pob · 30/10/2002 14:59

I have a subscription to Eve, which I think is great, but then I also feel I've outgrown Company and Cosmo....dp got the subscription, feeding my magazine habit to keep me happy when he's away....usually end up with a She, Red, Marie Claire and New Woman (again not relevent re age/lifestyle, but funny and love celebrity spy!) as well by the end of the month. Trying to trim down to just the one mag a month though, as we pay at least twice the cover price here and I reckon giving up our addictions (dp gets every classic car thing going) could give us a tiny pad with a few blades of grass for the wee ones in the 'burbs....oh dear, maybe I should be reading goodhousekeeping after all?

Enid · 30/10/2002 17:36

I've put a Heat subscription on my Christmas list I also read Vogue, Country Living and Homes and Gardens religiously. Supplement with Glamour, Red (although I always regret it as its just a load of ads) and Cosmo Girl as my friend is the editor
