Did your newborn mimic you within hours of birth?

And differentiate certain facial expressions by the second day

I did try it as I was a psychology student when DS1 was born, studying child development and wanted to try it out on my own home made experiment.

I am not sure about differentiating between facial expressions but I certainly got both my boys to stick their tongues out by coping me.

Yes, within hours. I can remember getting my brother to have a go when DS1 was only about 14 hours old.

Should this be in the Gifted and Talented section, you think?

Beetrootoyourself · 06/01/2008 16:32

apparently most babies do it.

not G&T

I think that hours is pushing it - days is more likely

I don't think hours is pushing it. I was goind to say that I think that DH tried it with DS1 in the delivery room but I thought I might have been misremembering but have a look at this. It is perfectly possible.

DS2 I am sure was pretty receptive but since I didn't have him in hospital I can't narrow down the time at which we tried to get him to stick out his tongue.

Ds1 did not stick his tongue out to copy me until he was much older. he didn't smile until 7 weeks. This, combined with his speech delay, lack of interest in human interaction and general hyperactivity had me extremely worried for a long time. But he is floating at school so there cannot be too much wrong.

Ds2 did poke his tongue out.

Niecie · 06/01/2008 18:12

Funny you should mention ASD, as my DS1 has been diagnosed with AS and I was wondering whether he should have been able to stick his tongue out. What he couldn't have done, is hang on to anything - I couldn't have picked him up by his grip alone iyswim. Interestingly, I think his dyspraxia now is more of an issue than his social communication problems. Certainly there was nothing in his early behaviour that suggested AS.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/01/2008 19:26

did the sticking toungue out thing with DD and she copied me, within an hour or so of birth. I'd seen this on some tv prog and wanted to give it a try

however, was then too traumatised by her constant hysterics for the next 3 months or so to try anything else (or remember anything TBH)

DS - never remembered to do any of this
