has anyone any ideas on what to get an 18 year boy (man?) for his birthday. only thing dh could come up with was a subscription to 'big and bouncy' or a crate of lager which shows the way his mind works.

Maybe an engraved tankard / hip flask etc.. That is what all my males friends seemed to get. Mind you that was 10 years ago!!

How much do you want to spend? How closely connected is the person?

Lindy · 24/10/2002 13:59

A fountain pen?

batey · 24/10/2002 14:00

Vouchers for driving lessons, good watch/pen......umm can't think of anything else right now. HTH!

natascha · 24/10/2002 14:01

it's my brother actually.
the problem is that if i like it then generally he doesn't on principle.
that's probably a little harsh but you get the idea.

HMV/Virgin/Smiths vouchers? I know it is a bit boring but at least they can buy what they want with it.

What sort of boy is he? Is he into sports or have any hobbies? Maybe you should ask him what he would like or get a few ideas from his close family - mum, siblings. HTH

natascha · 24/10/2002 14:10

i asked him what he might like and his responce?

'eerrr dunno really what ever you want'

any idea where i can get one?

Why not wrap up a big box with nothing inside! You can then always say, well - you didn't give me any ideas ...... and then perhaps give him some cash to get himself something he really wants!

BTW - suggest you agree to stop buying presents at 18 otherwise you'll have this problem for life!!

Hmmmm - tricky one - but so many possibilities ! I got my female cousin a "day spa" voucher for her 18th as I felt it was a kind of grown-up sophisticated present - and she loved it ! So - along the same lines - what about a voucher for a day of rally driving or go-karting etc - they're on private land so you don't need a driving licence. Or - tickets for him and a friend to go to the cinema/theatre and out for a meal ?

If not that - alcohol would surely be popular - if not with your mum ! I got my male cousin a cocktail kit and book for his 18th - but I don't know if he liked it as he was rude enough not to thank me !!! (Note to self - no more presents for him !! )

Scatterbrain · 24/10/2002 15:12

Alternatively get him something you really want yourself - then when he leaves it lying around unwanted you could hoover it up for him !!!

natascha · 24/10/2002 15:44

great idea scatterbrain, think i'll buy him some new shoes. saw a nice a nice pair the other day that would go with my fav dress...

Giving him women's shoes might be a bit suspicious and imagine your horror if he's delighted!

Scatterbrain · 24/10/2002 16:15

Would that be Rocky Horror then ?

natascha · 24/10/2002 16:20

the thought of my brother in rocky horror type get up is very very scary.

looks like i'm back to vouchers.

shame, they were loverly shoes.
