My dear, darling, angelic children have just locked me in the garden. DS1 (3 1/2) was unable to unlock the door again so I've had to smash a pane of glass to get back into my house.

Anyone want to buy 2 small children, slighty used but in pretty good condition?

I had something like this happen to me once when DS1 was about 8 weeks old. DD1 was at nursery and I had gone into the house and had to go out to the garden shed for something. Not sure how it happened, but the door closed on me and the shed didn't have a handle on the inside. I had to smash the glass window and climb out - all I could think was that my son was in the front room on his own and I was stuck in the shed. I tried shouting but no-one came but had to smash the window to get out. When I got out, I really cried.

Soupdragon

You poor thing, what did you do to upset them!!!
Seriously I bet you were frantic weren't you, how long were you out there?
My DH managed to lock himself and my eldest ourside the front door once when I was at work, so I had to drive back, luckily only 5 mins down the road and let them in.
You don't really want to sell them do you?

SoupDragon · 24/10/2002 13:15

I'd done nothing to upset them - in fact I'd just finished baking the little, um, darlings biscuits!! Maybe they just wanted to keep me out of the way whilst they polished them off...

Luckily, the pane of glass I broke was cracked anyway so I didn't have any qualms abot smashing it and therefore didn't waste much time trying to get back in before I broke it. I wasn't frantic about getting back in because I knew I could get back in by breaking the glass. I was, however, frantic because I couldn't get the little dears to keep away from the door to let me break the glass!

I think Bumblelion's experience is scarier actually.

As for selling them, quite frankly, I'd probably give them away to anyone who asked!

My younger brother managed to lock himself in the bathroom (solid door, skylights, no windows) when he was 2 1/2. He was in there for 3 hours before Mum and I managed to get a man to drill through the door so that we could undo the bolt. The best thing was that he had remembered to use his potty throughout the whole experience!

MandyD · 24/10/2002 14:38

I always worry that my DS (3½ will lock himself in the bathroom/public toilet, but so far it hasn't happened. He seems to be able to remember how to lock and unlock things really well...so far!

My dp had a great trick - he could rock/bounce his cot clear accross the room till it was wedged against the door so no one could get into his room to deal with him crying!

His mum tried everything, including strapping him into his cot (arms & legs ties to the rails) but nothing seamed to work. His Houdini tendancies have vanished now - hope they've not been passed on to ds.

Bumblelion · 24/10/2002 16:05

Janeway - the story about your DP did being a smile to my face. I can just imagine it, him being tied to the cot - arms and legs spread-eagled. Hope you don't mind me saying this !?!?!? If you tell your DP about what he used to get up to and the consequences (i.e. being tied down spread-eagled), he might start trying to bounce your beg across the bedroom!!!

Even your BED!!

me and my sister locked ourselevs in the toilet, and when we threw the key out of the window it landed in my dad's pocket. Of course it took them ages hunting through the bushes before they found it.

SoupDragon - do you fancy a swap? I've certainly had enough of my two this week!

I saw ds1's teacher in town today, and felt like kneeling down and worshipping him - can't wait til Monday when he goes back to school. If Christmas were straight after a holiday instead of just before, I'm sure teachers would get fantastic presents!

SoupDragon · 24/10/2002 19:06

Sorry KMG, I was kind of hoping to swap them for none! I've had enough of kids for a while!!

I think the bathroom lock-in is very common. I recall being locked in with cousin at a young age. Following mil's advice, we've removed the keys, and always forget to tell flustered guests

emsiewill · 28/10/2002 19:49

dh once locked himself out of the house with dd2 (aged 7 months) inside. This was 2 minutes before he was due to collect dd1 from playschool. Luckily she was asleep strapped into her (first stage) car seat, just inside the front door, and as we have no-one to call on in these kinds of moments of crisis, he had to make a split second decision. He ran to playschool, collected dd1, ran all the way back, called someone from his work "with skinny arms" (I kid you not) to try and reach the door handle and when she couldn't (surprise, surprise), he gave in and called a locksmith. DD2 slept throughout the whole experience.

When he was abt 2&1/2, my DS2 locked me in the kitchen !! only one door ! I tried shouting from the window ( too small for my ample frame to crawl thru... )to someone passing by ...but no response.. it was now almost 20-40 mins when he (DS2) realized he cud 'hear' me but cudn't 'see' me and started bawling ...thankfully he dint budge from outside..I kept talking to him .. ( i had horrible visions of what he mt do on his own.. leave alone ' throwing away the key '...!!!!)

i had no phone either in the kitchen to call DH or the neighbours ...Finally i hit upon an old Secret Seven trick ( or was it Famous Five ???) There was abt an inch of space beneath the dooor and I carefully waggled my fingers underneath ....so DS 2 cud see them ...and said" give... key... to...mummy " ....AND HE DID !!!!! WHEW !! I cried when i got out ....
