Re using maiden name.

I've been married years. I dropped my maiden name and use my married name , i have had kids. My brother doesn't want kids and at his age now fairly unlikely. Therefore our family name will end with him. I was wondering how I could legally use a double barrelled surname to incorporate my maiden name to carry it on. Also for my kids if they wanted too. Is there a way of doing it legally myself or does it involve a solicitor. I would like it official on passport etc.

I've never changed my own surname (never been married) but I assume you just do a deed poll. An "unenrolled" one is fine. (Essentially a letter signed by 2 people. Send it off to wherever you want it changed eg dvla).

For the DC it's the same thing but if they are under 16 you need permission of anyone with PR. If they are 16+ they can do their own without permission.
