In which bit of London would you choose to live?

I moved to Islington in the summer. As I expected, it's a very mixed area - some posh bits, some rough bits. I know the whole of London is like this, pretty much, but this area seems particularly polarised. Anyway, to get to the point, I am thinking about moving again in the new year, in fact I'm going to look at a flat in Bayswater this weekend, and from the minimal investigations I've done it seems to me that Bayswater will suit me much better.

I'm loving living in London, and ideally I want to be somewhere central, buzzing (i.e. not quiet residential but lots of shops/restaurants etc), not too posh, not too rough and preferably further west.

Any recommendations for me? Where would you choose and why?

I was thinking about you yesterday but didn't have time to come on and see how you were Sm. Wish you didn't have any crap to deal with. Hope you're okay.

hoxtonchick · 22/11/2004 11:11

hey meysey, do you live near London Fields? If so, do I know you?! We love living here, can highly reccommend it SM.

Davros · 22/11/2004 12:29

Probably a wise decision SM with all the disruption. It might be worth waiting to really find out how you feel about different areas before trying to move again. Hoping to meet up with Dino again soon which would prob be Islington and will try to get Maomao to come so we'll let you know.

Thanks davros, it would be really good to see you again

Having lived in Wandsworth, Islington, Stockwell, Clapham and finally settling in Dulwich (by far the nicest) I am truely an EVIL Person being a South of the River type of girl. Clapham was lovely but is now full of ex Sloanies, still lots of restaurants and bars but you need loads of cash! now Dulwich is where all the ex claphamites have moved as you get more for your money but its not that West. I work in Kensington nice but far too central for my liking. Wandsworth Common is nice lots of restaurants and nice shops close to Clapham and Battersea and main line stations. All areas have rich and poor parts just depends on which part you want to move to. chiswick is nice but Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith....Please....

I know I'm not thinking of moving anytime soon now, but wondered if anyone can enlighten me about whether Chalk Farm is nice or nasty?

Chalk Farm gritty, inner-city, but good access to Regent's Park IIRC.

Flum · 25/11/2004 15:26

Spitalfields.

Instant access to the city.
Cheap as chips (except Fournier St)
Only need Zone 1 travel card.
Instant access to Bricklane curries
Great market on a Sunday.

spacemonkey · 25/11/2004 15:39

I've got enough grit where I am I think

Spitalfields Market is fab isn't it flum

Scuse me, I live just up the road from Chalk Farm! Its much nicer than it used to be, good mix of shops, cafes etc. Primrose Hill on the doorstep and very central. There is a "gritty" side to it but I think its generally quite nice now. Market crowds on weekends though as Camden Town tube is shut for incoming or outgoing passengers, can't remember which, so lots of visitors use Chalk Farm. The ROund House is being done up at the moment as an Arts Venue, Sally Army building being redone and will have cafe, there's Marine Ices that's been there for donkeys, Neals Farm Remedies, Belgo, Loch Fyne place, Nandos, Caribbean restaurant and lots more. If you decide to visit let me know and me and Maomao will accompany you! The good thing about Camden, grotty and gritty though it is, it does have that funky, touristy side which keeps it from being just grim! I go to Camden more than to Hampstead for M&S, Woolies and Argos.

I always like to update my threads, so just to tie this one up, I have found a fantastic 3 bed flat in earl's court, swapping with a family with four kids who want to be in north london. We're putting the exchange forms in this week, so I should be moving there in April, all being well.

nailpolish · 24/01/2005 17:36

oh thats great!

JanH · 24/01/2005 20:13

Ooooh, SD - lots of nice young mayans in Earls Court I think?

That's great news, well done, and won't the family-with-4-children be happy in your house!

lou33 · 24/01/2005 20:15

EC, so much nicer than N1, imo

spacedonkey · 25/01/2005 11:34

jan - lots of nice young mayans in EC yes ... but they're all gay!

NameChangingMancMidlander · 25/01/2005 11:41

How did a thread about London postcodes degenerate into a page full of smut ?

suzywong · 25/01/2005 11:42

Chalk Farm are you talking about Chalk Farm? I did my courting in Chalk Farm. A bit rough round the Prince of Wales Road end I think

lou33 · 25/01/2005 11:42

it is inevitable when one of us three start a thread
