my partners family want to go to the beach for my partners birthday in July. My little one will turn 1 a week before. I said maybe not the best idea because the sea is cold, the sand is boiling hot and there’s not a whole lot to do. Not to mention it’s over 2hours away, and my son hates the car and it’s difficult to get him to nap anywhere but home!

they think i’m baby-ing him because i said the sea is too cold and the sand is too hot. Little ones shouldn’t be in the sun too much, and there’s no way he’s going to sit still under and umbrella or whatever.

options? advice? I suggested doing something a bit closer to home/more enjoyable for him.

What does your partner want to do for his birthday? Do that!

I thought that everyone loves the beach! Certainly all little kids love the beach. There's loads for them to do even if it's a bit dull for you.
It sounds like a great idea- he'll love crawling/tottering around on the sand and burying his toes and having his feet splashed in the sea. Throwing pebbles in rock pools, eating ice cream what's not to like? Yes little kids can't be out in the sun much but get him an all body sun suit, a good hat, some factor 50 and find some shade in the middle of the day and he'll be fine.

My son absolutely loves the beach and I took him shortly after his first birth which is also in July. Think it was mid august we first went. He loved it, crawling along the water and digging in the sand etc, making sand castles together.

I just made sure he was kept well hydrated. He wore one of them swim suits with the arms and legs and a sun hat.
He was absolutely fine! We had a great day.

I grew up near the beach and went most days as a baby/toddler/child. Are you in the UK? I never remember or experience the sand being too hot here and when I’ve been with friends children it’s always been an enjoyable experience. We’re now in the midlands but would break up a journey if needed to mean we still could go to the beach.

You don't know what he will be like on July though.

A tip maybe. Double fitted sheet on the sand with bags and stuff holding the corners up and an umbrella can make a little play area with sides

Or ask your partner what he wants to do on his birthday. It's not all about the kids.

What country are you in ?
As that makes a difference to the temperatures.

Speaking as someone in England, I think that would be a lovely day - although of course not if it is persisting down.......

However, if it is your dp's birthday, what does he want to do? You could take me to the beach every birthday and I would be delighted, but it isn't everyone's dream day out.

All my dc have been to the beach at that age and we've had a lovely day. I do thing you are being a bit daft about the temperature thing. The travelling - who knows what your little one will be like then? Babies change a lot, month by month.
