I dropped my mobile into a glass of orange juice...

...while trying to carry some washing, dd2, the mobile and the glass downstairs, all at the same time. It still works, but you can't hear what I'm saying, it sounds like I'm very very far away. I think it should be dried out now, so do you think it's gone? Or is there any hope that it will recover, or can it be fixed?
Am really

my dd's mobile went through the washing machine and after it dried out it was still in perfect working order

orange juice may be more destructive than water though

If I were you i'd put it somewhere warm but not on direct heat, and leave it for a couple of days. I once found dd sucking my phone (was soaked) and it wouldn't work at all but after a couple of days to dry out it was normal again.

If it had been water, then I would have said it would be fine... orange juice? Less chance, tbh, sorry

Of course, if you get to the point you're going to chuck it anyway (and you've tried everyone else's suggestions first!!), then removing the sim card then rinsing it quickly in warm soapy water and letting it dry out thoroughly for 24 hours (in an airing cupboard maybe?) might rescue it. I have rescued electronics in this way before (mainly kids toys type electronics though). Not really advisable, and may damage it more. Just if you've got to the point of "I'm chucking it out anyway" last ditch attempt...

Um... rinsing the PHONE not the SIM CARD. must remember to proof read posts

sorry to say that when i first got a shiny lovely new mobile some idiot in the pub knocked over our table. my phone smashed onto the floor, battery came off and was soaked in beer. after switching itself on and off and behaving strangely for a few hours it was fine...for six weeks, then it completely shut down. sent it back to the shop but it couldnt be repaired. someone did tell me once that sticky things were worse than water but cant say how true that is.

I don't think liquid is v. good for mobiles. It might be OK when it dries out, but don't be surprised if it needs to be replaced I know this because I used to let dd put my mobile in her mouth when she was teething, and one day it stopped working. I took it in for repair, and they opened the phone up and saw telltale droplets of saliva. It could not be repaired.

But don't feel too bad. Several years ago I was visiting a friend in NYC. She was on the 8th floor and I was standing outside her door, waiting for her to return home. I took my mobile out of my bag, my hand shook, and I accidentally threw my mobile out the window.

I once had my mobile in the back pocket of the jeans I was wearing, so managed to drop it down the toilet as I pulled them down! (Oh why can't we just use flies, like men!) Anyway, after fishing it out (no, I hadn't yet 'been'!) I took it apart and put it in the airing cupboard. Then did the same thing about a week later! It did dry out and worked fine afterwards. Maybe orange juice's acidity would have a more damaging effect though? Or, if you have any sachets of 'silica' gel (the ones that look dangerously like salt sachets!) maybe you could try taking it apart and putting it in a sealed plastic bag with one for a while? It migh be a more gentle method of drawing any traces of moisture out?

I was going to rejoice this moment because my phone appears to be working again, but now you got me worried again - maybe it will stop working again in a few weeks? Do you think I should leave it alone now as it appears to be working, or try and do something like wash in soapy water to get the remains of the OJ out?

If it's working again and you've checked that no keys are sticking then I'd leave well alone, tbh!

nightowl · 18/11/2004 02:43

if its dried out then leave alone! if its going to screw up then there isnt much you can do. but hey maybe beer is worse than orange juice
