Hi, can someone just answer a few questions about the Kindle?

I am spending a ridiculous amount on books and then having nowhere to store them, so i’m wanting to switch to a kindle.

I don’t really want to get Kindle Unlimited as I’ve read that many books from well known authors are not on there.

How else can I buy books for my kindle? and can I buy any book I want?

thank you!

You can buy them from amazon as and when you want. Just search what's available. I tend to choose ones costing a couple of £s

If you have a tablet you can down load the kindle app on to there, or on to your smart phone. If you really want to purchase a kindle when you set up your device it links with your Amazon account. You can then go onto Amazon and buy the book in its kindle form.
If you have prime membership you can get a free book once a month (or at least you once could, not sure if this offer is still running though. Books are quite often discounted and the kindle book store has things like deal of the day/ book of the week etc etc.

There's loads of free books or 99p-£1.99... I didn't use my kindle for ages cos it was tiny ab dark but then I got fed up with buying loads of books and storing so got a paper white and I love it

If you have a tablet check your local library.
You can usually download an app that allows you to borrow books electronically.

Oops didn't answer your questions fully. Yes you can buy any book you want. You don't have to sign up to any deals. I did unlimited for a free three month trial, it was easier enough to stop, I didn't use it enough to warrant a subscription. The other thing I've used is switching between reading a book and for a few extra pounds I can upgrade the book to an audio book. I don't do it often, but if I'm reading a really good book, it's quite handy to switch to listening if in the car 😂

I don’t have Kindle unlimited just buying books on Amazon. I would go for Kindle Paperwhite by the way.

Either you buy the book on Amazon (the Kindle edition) and it delivers to your Kindle, or you can search the store from your Kindle and download a book immediately . So if you finish a book late in the evening you can download the next in the series straight away if you want. As long as you have an account and payment set up. There are always lots of £1/£2 daily/monthly deals.

You can buy any book that has a Kindle edition, most novels and new books have the option.
I had Kindle unlimited for a while but wasn't really getting the value from it and cancelled.

I think of you have a Kindle, you can only buy books from Amazon for it. But if you have a Kobo, you can buy them from the Kobo book store, and might be able to borrow them from the library. I think all of this varies in different places though, and I've never spent enough time to get a proper handle on it.

I've got a Kindle, and I buy books from Amazon it (I don't seem to be able to borrow books from the library for it). I had Kindle Unlimited for a while, but it was pretty crap.

BorrowBox and Libby are both library apps. You will need to be a member of your library (or you can join online) the two downside are: not a huge selection of books, and a popular book can take a good few weeks before it available to borrow. The advantage is it's free and there are no late fines, as books automatically are removed from your bookshelf on their due back date.

You can down load the library apps on a kindle fire (I don't know about the paper white or ebook specific kindles). The Libby app is the same as overdrive (it's a bit cumbersome to use).

Having a kindle opens up a huge world of access to independently published authors works and now I rarely read the 'big name traditionally published' authors.

Same here. If there's an author I love, eg Terry Pratchett (obvs before he sadly died) then I will buy the physical book, but otherwise I love reading books by people I'd never heard of. For me, Kindle Unlimited is more than worth the price. Yes, some books are shit, but lots more are great and certainly no worse then the 500th book written by James Patterson or whoever. You can also get some of the popular authors on KU or Prime Reading. I tend to put ones i want to read on my wish list and then get a notification when they drop in price or are free.
thatonesmine · 31/12/2021 00:31

I was underwhelmed by Unlimited but it's worth signing up for the daily deals, I've been introduced to a number of authors I would never have otherwise read. Also take a look at uk.ereaderiq.com/, you can search for favourite authors or specific titles and get alerts when they drop in price.
