No where to live for Lowryn! Homeless for Christmas?

Lowryn · 16/11/2004 10:45

AHHHHHHH!
We are supposed to leave our home on 6th Dec. The landlord wants to sell up and due to bad credit, no money, no employment, we are going to become homeless.
We have just had a visit from the man from the council who tells us that there are no houses available and the min wait is about 9months. It looks like our only housing option is hostel/bed and breakfast.
We are going to sit here though and wait for the courts to throw us out. We should be able to drag it out to just after Xmas, but still
AHHHHHHHHHHHH
What the hell are we supposed to do with all our furniture etc?
Does anyone want a three piece brown leather suite (less than a year old)?
Want to hear positive re-homing, lottery winning, or miracle cure type stories please

not got any useful relevant advice i am afraid but really wanted to bump this up for you.

sorry you are going through this. have you checked the website of your local council to see what their policy is on housing homeless families - just in case it says anything different to what you have been told. only other thing i can think of is you contacting shelter for advice.

MummyToSteven · 16/11/2004 11:08

only other thought is have you checked with CAB re:financial position generally and/or there are any benefits that you/your partner or husband are entitled to and could be claiming?

joanneg · 16/11/2004 11:09

blimey Lowryn - what a situation you poor thing. cant you move on and claim housing benefit if you are on benefits? Do you have family near by? where about in the country do you live at the moment (north/south)

Lowryn · 16/11/2004 11:13

Hi thanks for posting, I was starting to hear the wind blowing and crickets chirping
Have spoken to CAB and the council, we would be fine if it wasn't for the landlord kicking us out.
Unfortunately we don't pass credit checks on private rentals and can't find anything affordable anyway.

We are in suffolk I have family in Norfolk so we are registered with the councils in both places.

If you're homeless, your council should find somewhere for you to stay, even if it is a B&B. Most council authorities have temporary houses for people just like you...! My partner and I had to move out of our old house a few weeks before my son was born, and we had a meeing with a housing officer straight away, and the next week we had a place! They have a duty not to let people become homeless, so get on the phone to them, and make sure they find you somewhere straight away!!!!

Lowryn · 16/11/2004 11:20

We've just had the housing office round. He basically said that there were hundreds of people like us and no housing available.
We are so spoilt, we have a lovely three bed place with lots of furniture and bits and pieces. How can we go from that to a B&B....Do you just have to sell or chuck your stuff away?
It is harder for DH because he has gone from earning a fair wage to seeing no money come in. In the past 6 years we have slumped from a huge barn conversion, to a nice three bed rental to the possibilities of a hostel...Not good for a man's sense of worth eh?

can you afford storage for your furniture, Lowryn? i think ours was about £20/month

Lowryn · 16/11/2004 11:31

thats reasonable mts...I was looking on the internet at it was closer to £170 per month so I stopped looking! Who was that through?

OP posts:
joanneg · 16/11/2004 11:32

Lowryn - I know that its not much but I live in Essex (not far from you) CAT me if you would like me to store some of your stuff (we have a bit of space in our loft). We would be able to fit furniture - but would be fine for boxes and knik knacks. Have a think about it I would be willing to come over to you and meet you and collect that stuff and give you all my details. (I know that it is a risk on your part because you dont know me - not sure of a way around that)

fairyfly · 16/11/2004 11:33

My landlord takes housing benefit, has three empty houses and owes me a huge favour?

joanneg · 16/11/2004 11:33

that was meant to say would not be able to fit furniture!!!

MummyToSteven · 16/11/2004 11:34

don't remember the details but DH probably will so will ask him tonight when he is home from work. Don't even remember whether it was Manchester or Liverpool I know we were definitely paying a lot lot less than £170 per month for storage.

Lowryn · 16/11/2004 16:29

Where are his houses fairyfly?
Thanks joanneg. I may CAT you once I know more. That is really kind of you.

Sorry read where you live, absolutely miles away

zephyrcat · 16/11/2004 16:43

what about your deposit? the landlord has to give you that back at the end of your stay. Would that be enough to put down on somewhere else?

Lowryn · 18/11/2004 07:54

Ah, no our deposit wouldn't get us anywhere. Since DH is a bankrupt and I have horrendously bad credit we would have to put up 6 months rent in advance.

I got a letter from our council yesterday and they have reported that the letting agent has informed them that we are being evicted because we didn't keep up with the rent on several occassions and the inside and outside of the property was untidy.
Due to this we are classed as making ourselves intentionally homeless and will get no homeless points for 12 months

Soooo angry

The thing is that the Landlord visited recently and was totally with the state of the place.

You can move area's, which you may not want to do, but if you re-locate elsewhere in the country you may get re housed straight away, remember seeing story in local paper about it recently, with people getting re housed immediately, you could think about that?
