Problem with a sale on ebay - advice please?

I sold an item on ebay - for just under £100. Posted it last Monday (ie., a week ago today) via Royal Mail's Standard Parcel Service. I got proof of posting but (kicking myself now) no insurance or anything else. He says it hasn't arrived - he's in Northern Ireland so I guess it might take longer than the standard 3-5 days? If it doesn't turn up what's my next move? He only has 4 feedbacks (all positive though) I'm really worried

Royal mail should reimburse you some money...which you could refund him.....however if he didn't ask for or pay extra for insurance then you will need to check...or see if someone else is clear on ebay policy. I had a scare with a pshchair i posted a while ago now- it arrived 10 days later than expected.

RM won't do much until the parcel is a couple of weeks late.

I did have a parcel not turn up.....and the seller got money from RM. She gave me back my money minus the postage- rm had given her the amount I paid minus the postage.

keep in good contact with him daily and let him kno what RM have said when you contact them....and negotiate concerning refunds etc etc...but he didn't pay for insurance......I woud be checking ebay policy there!

Anyone better at ebay policy than me??

if you got proof of posting you can phone royal mail see if it has been delivered - if it has you can obtain a signature

Royal Mail will only reimburse you up to the value of £28 if you didn't take out postal insurance. Information is here . I only know this as I lost a parcel a few months ago but I was able to claim for it as it was only £17.
If I was you I'd fill out the complaint form and see what they offer you, and take it from there.

Thanks for that - maybe it will still turn up. Wish I had taken out insurance on it now...

I just waited 10 days for something to turn up in post....and it did....miracle!!! I do not trust Royal Mail at all, I mean, what were they doing for 10 days???? It was a CD...so it may yet turn up...don't lose hope yet!

marthamoo · 15/11/2004 17:14

Hope so marz - thanks for that.

I'm nearly sure that on ebay the risk (postage-wise) lies with the buyer. They tell you to ask the seller if you want insurance and you (the buyer) are expected to pay.

Wait a couple of days and then email ebay.

Frizbe · 15/11/2004 17:24

senorapostrophe, you are correct! I have an ebay shop and the risk is with the buyer, if they did not purchase the insurance you offered then you are not at fault. Per all previous advice, Royal Mail will reimbuse you upto a certain ammt uninsured if you kick up enough stink. I have found in the past, if you send something parcel size via normal post, not the 'parcel post' sometimes the depot staff/postie can't be bothered to take it out, as oversize, until they are pushed.......ahem......(the old I'm not taking that on my round today excuse....naff) Good luck!

BadHair · 15/11/2004 17:52

Did the buyer pay using Paypal? If so he's covered under that, minus processing costs.

BadHair · 15/11/2004 17:53

Whoops posted too soon. Meant to add that he's also covered under ebay's buyer protection policy, but he would have to file a complaint against you in order to claim.

pixiefish · 15/11/2004 17:56

If he didn't ask for insurance and you've got proof of posting then basically it's his risk and his loss.

marthamoo · 16/11/2004 09:23

I emailed him again and...he got it yesterday. Just hadn't crossed his mind to let me know...grrrrrrrrr.

Thanks so much for all the advice - I am taking out insurance on pricier items as of now.
