Am I alone in feeling this way?

Have 4 kids so of course I am going to go with the flow, but each year I am becoming more and more detached from this christmas crack.

It is so blown out of proportion with people buying into the crazy spending, and living beyond their means!

Personally I think everyone is running around like headless chickens!!

Or am I just being a bah humbug!!!

I am similar to you except that life has been put into perspective for us this last 2 months with a couple of DCs friends losing parents and my DH job is not going too well! so I am focused on us just having some family fun time, being together and making cookies etc!

southeastastra · 16/12/2007 21:18

yes, i agree, it's big steaming pile of sh*te

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 16/12/2007 21:19

i know what you mean joedar, the funniest sight is people doing the MAHOOSIVE xmas food shopping - quite often two trollies full of shite (bags and bags of crisps, multipacks of crackers, 10 different cheeses, several bags of giant nuts etc) i mean, the shops are only shut for 2 frigging days!!!!

manchita · 16/12/2007 21:20

I love buying my dc gifts I know they wiill love but I don't go overboard and it's not the main thing about Christmas. It's about, friends, family, happiness and fun for us.

mylittleponey · 16/12/2007 21:21

you don't have to spend much - just enjoy the time of year.

frostythesnowmum · 16/12/2007 21:21

Bah Humbug - where is your inner child
Christmas is magical and children love it.
At the end of the day Christmas is what you make it - relax and enjoy

TAMBAwasright · 16/12/2007 21:22

Agree with TMMJ, it is about Church and services, and if you are not into that why totally and utterly overstretch yourself on food and drink etc.,

You either believe or you don't if you don't go to work and stop bothering the rest of us who do believe.

YuleLoveHekateAtSolstice · 16/12/2007 21:25

I love it.

Ok, so the food shopping bill has been huge, but for me, that's not the point.

I am cooking a meal for loads of people that I love, who'll come round and share with me. We are going to have fun together. We'll all get to see all the kids excitement.

personally, I don't see it as hassle, because I'm doing what I WANT to do and looking forward to the conclusion of my efforts - my family having a great time. iyswim. the fun and the sharing and the pleasure we'll get out of it all, is what I see.

AND I'm doing it again New Years Eve!

I just LURVE entertaining, I do. I'm crackers!

yama · 16/12/2007 21:26

At the very least it's time off work. Winter really needs a bright winter festival. How depressing would winter be without it?

For those lucky enough to have faith, it is something even more special.

frostythesnowmum · 16/12/2007 21:42

Tamba - thats not a very christian attitude

joedar · 16/12/2007 21:46

I enjoy each day with my family and spend alot of quality time with them not just at christmas time.

Love having friends and family around all year so its no different at xmas.

Not religious so from that aspect maybe I am missing the spiritual side.

But in genreral I don't see many people very happy to be rushing around panic buying and working overtime spending less time with their families to afford it.

Love the idea of Santa and excitement on kids faces but it will be low key wihtout excessive money being spent.

Tamba (are you really Tamba??) how many people have the option to go to work if they don't like it? Most workplaces, in this country at least, are closed.

TMMJ, I take your point that you can make what you want of it - but often at the expense of fighting off pressure and emotional blackmail from others to do it the way they want you to.

moondog · 17/12/2007 09:06

I find staying out of shops and avoiding tv works wonders.

Hallgerda · 17/12/2007 09:23

moondog, I already do that! I think I need to arrange a selective telephone failure as the next step...

LittleSusiesMum · 17/12/2007 11:13

i agree with you op. i hate christmas with a passion & think it is a waste of time and money.

Lauriefairycake · 17/12/2007 11:20

Hmmm.... I love Christmas and totally agree that you get the Christmas you create for yourself.

I personally do have a huge trolley piled with food (none of which goes to waste with a hungry hubby/dog/chickens) because I do not go shopping for two weeks.

Christmas for me is about not going shopping at all in the festive period or going to the sales (not interested in buying stuff I don't need).

We will stay at home, watch films, play card games and eat a few chocs. And not leave the house for two weeks.

ConnorTraceptive · 17/12/2007 11:36

I think christmas loses it's edge a bit as an adult {probably because we're the ones paying for it!!) but I do remember just how exciting it was as a child and I love the fact that ds will get to experience that. So for that reason I still love it.

Also DH family are really social so there's lots of family gatherings to go to and we have a lot of fun. It doesn't need to be a huge spend fest.

robin3 · 17/12/2007 11:47

Not if you don't buy in to all that excess and concentrate on the bits the kids love.

When I was a kid I liked the fact that we all spent the day together and the little things like crackers, coins in the Christmas Pud, naff Christmas Carols, playing games in the afternoon. Presents and food were insignificant really.

OrmIrian · 17/12/2007 11:50

I love it. Don't buy into all the commercial excess - you don't have to. It can be as much as you want and no more.

joedar · 17/12/2007 16:31

TMMJ I def am saying that other peoples christmas is bull if they choose to spend the days before it
Spending excess,
Feeling stressed,
Being stuck in traffic,
Working extra hours to pay for crappy toys made in China that are sprayed in fermaldahyde! that cost a fraction of the cost.
Eating to excess and feeling depressed afer as they have gained weight they did not want to.
Drinking to excess just because its christmas!

I have great respect for thoose people who enjoy quality time with the family playing games and just chilling out.

Also thoose who enjoy the religious side if it makes them feel happy in themselves.

But I am sure theese people do this all year around anyway they don't need xmas to do so.

In pagan days it was used as a festival to break up a long winter, when there was not much else happening.

But nowadays there is plenty to keep us busy on theese long winter nights!

I may be just a little synical though and wish that I had that child like innocence again!!

The whole prospect of Christmas makes me shudder and retch.

Brandnewchristmaspyjamasgirl · 17/12/2007 16:37

Yes I have tried and tried to make it a happy occasion but have just found myself screaming at the dc

For F* sake it's Christmas stop arguing"

I was under extreme pressure at the time

I am also fed up of the mad rage in shops relativesdringing me to tell me to find a toy for them to buy for the Dc as they can't be arsed.

Also fed up of having hardly any shoppping in house cos I spent all my money on the last batch of pressies this saturday and did a bare minimum shop

I am now skint and starving til Friday

moondog · 17/12/2007 21:50

MI,all of it?
Doesn't the thought of some top food and booze quicken your pulse just a leetle??
