DP's works do had organised for the guys to go to Cheltenham for the races for the day, but the women (partners of the men) were to take the children to an indoor playcentre for the day . I am seething over this .

In most companies the christmas do is just for the people who work there hence NO partners invited

so basically the people who work there are going to the races and the company is paying for the families to go to a playcentre if they want to?

just don't go

there is a sexist tinge to it .. but there's also a 'you don't have to take them up on it because it's not such a big deal really' tinge to it too

lazawreath · 16/12/2007 15:02

so in other words, no women allowed.

LittleSusiesMum · 16/12/2007 15:02

Yes Magrat that is correct.

Why can't the company pay for the WAGS to go for a meal though? (without kids).

LittleSusiesMum · 16/12/2007 15:03

laza - no women were invited so i guess that means no allowed. maybe they think women are not interested in the races, not sure really.

OP posts:
Magrat · 16/12/2007 15:04

because a playcentre is a few quid and a meal is more like £40?

LittleSusiesMum · 16/12/2007 15:04

yeah bloody tightwads

LittleSleighBellasRinging · 16/12/2007 15:06

Blimey, this shows just how ineffective equal ops legislation is.

If the law had any teeth, this firm would have been audited and found wanting at least 20 years ago.

Of course it's sexist.

Magrat · 16/12/2007 15:07

why tightwads? you don't work for them ..

how many factory workers are there? because that's a lot of money on top of the cost of taking them to the races

edam · 16/12/2007 15:07

I think companies vary - I've worked in plenty where partners are invited to the Christmas do.

LittleSusiesMum · 16/12/2007 15:07

I think the company has a new MD (a bloke) & is trying to encourage women employers to work on the factory floor as there are not any.

OP posts:
LittleSusiesMum · 16/12/2007 15:08

employees

frothykindofadrink · 16/12/2007 15:08

I get that the workplace is sexist

but if your dh's work is 100% male then at least they have thought about the women

but when your dh/dw has a works do, you stay at home and look after kids whether it is daytime do or evening do that means you have to put them to bed alone

they could easily not have done anything at all

is it one of those friendly play places where you can take wine?

TenLordsaLapin · 16/12/2007 15:08

"it's predicated on gender determinism" - please, it's predicated on sheer laziness. The workforce want to go to the races. They don't WANT to go out with their partners, they want to have an away day with their workmates and drink beer. They know their wives and partners will be pissed off - understandably! - and the majority of them obviously have children, so they've tried to come up with an option to placate their partners whilst not incurring childcare costs.

Just don't go to the playcentre if you don't want to! and give your DP a bollocking and say it was be nice if partners got to go as well. But don't cry sexism just because it happens to be all male.

edam · 16/12/2007 15:11

'it just happens to be all male'. Yeah, right.

The fact that otherwise (as far as one can tell from MN) sane, rational people can make such statements just proves how far we are from genuine equality.

lazawreath · 16/12/2007 15:21

yeah lapin, you crazy mo fo

lazawreath · 16/12/2007 15:23

how about all the women getting together and going to the bookies instead, plenty of machines for the children to play on and refreshments. Indoors to so you won't get cold. See, ive solved the problem for you.

edam · 16/12/2007 15:24

at lazawreath's solution.

edam · 16/12/2007 15:24

it would be educational too, think of all the maths they'd pick up...

TenLordsaLapin · 16/12/2007 15:25

edam, I've working in several offices where I have been the only woman. And when I left, they would have been all male. SO WHAT. Is a workplace full of women sexist?

TenLordsaLapin · 16/12/2007 15:31

I've worked obviously (I had to leave because of my crap grammar )

Magrat · 16/12/2007 15:36

LOL Lapin

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 16/12/2007 15:37

Is the company paying for the soft-play centre? If the employees get to go racing and partners to the play centre then fair dos.

If it's split by gender then not.

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 16/12/2007 15:43

Ive also worked in an office where it was all women for long periods of time. Mainly as the pay was so crap . No sane man would've or could've afforded to work there for long.

lazawreath · 16/12/2007 15:43

If it was a choice between the races and a playcentre, I know where id rather be. Unless I could play on the equipment myself of course. 'Beat it kid, this ball pool is mine!'

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 16/12/2007 15:45

After me!!
