Fjäll Räven backpack - comfortable to carry?

Hello

No idea if I have posted this in the right place - sorry if not.

Thinking of getting a Fjäll Rävan backpack for carrying the kids' stuff about on day trips. BUT - they don't seem to have padded shoulder straps so I'm wondering if it would end up being really uncomfortable on my shoulders after a short while of carrying it.

Does anyone have any experience/feedback they can share? Don't really want to invest (even second hand they are £££) if it's just going to be uncomfortable to carry.

Thanks in advance!

Not particularly comfortable no! Like you say the straps are thin and not padded so not great for carrying heavy stuff in.

I haven't noticed mine being particularly uncomfortable
Like the pp I like how it opens so easy to pack and find stuff.

CheshireSplat · 03/11/2021 21:24

In best Mumsnet style this isn't answering your question, but another one....

I've just bought a Kipling rucksack with padded straps. Love it.

Allium16 · 03/11/2021 21:33

Thanks everyone. With bottles of water/snacks/wipes/a change of clothes etc I think it would get quite heavy and I think for me the straps prob would be a problem, especially in the summer when there are no jumpers/coats for extra padding. I think I will wait until the kids are bigger and more willing/able to carry their own stuff.

@CheshireSplat - magic, thank you. It's almost like you know how parents' minds work.... Wink

I have the fold top.. good straps but doesn't have the same opening as the more popular one.

I have the laptop bag, it's the same style but bigger with padded straps. I love mine.

I have this one-because I wanted padded straps. I use the laptop pocket for nappies and wipes.

Scarby9 · 03/11/2021 21:55

I find mine very comfortable. I use it for work, packed full of books each day.
I also like the carrying handles to vary the way I carry it.

TheUndoingProject · 03/11/2021 21:58

I wanted to use mine for commuting but found it too heavy when full of my laptop etc. I think they do sell separate padded straps you can add though.

LennyMurdoch · 03/11/2021 22:02

Presume you mean the Kanken?

My DC all had the Raven for school - it's more of a rucksack but much more comfort to wear than the Kanken.

Helenluvsrob · 03/11/2021 22:05

I have the standard size Kanken.

It’s very comfortable despite the narrow straps. They just sit right and don’t slip. Even with heavy weight in it

MarlowMafia · 03/11/2021 22:05

I have a cath kidston backpack that was a gift and it’s surprisingly comfortable to carry around with all the kid’s stuff. The straps are quite padded.

ouchmyfeet · 03/11/2021 22:10

I didn't find mine comfortable when it was full. It was fine when light

Birchwoods · 03/11/2021 22:20

You can buy padding for the straps! I used mine for a couple of years without and it was fine, but decided to get the padded straps recently and it's definitely more comfortable.

verymiddleaged · 03/11/2021 22:38

I also use Kipling rucksacks for this purpose.
They are comfortable and hard wearing.

IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel · 03/11/2021 23:27

Why OP? Why would you do this?
Up until 40 minutes ago I had never heard of this website/ shop/den of iniquity and now I have fallen for several very expensive yet clearly absolute necessities!
Very much hoping that you or anyone really will tell me the quality is pretty rubbish and to keep my hard earned cash to myself.
Not really! I actually hope someone will tell me that they have fantastic sales or even go in for all the black Friday hoopla!

Also, that bag you are considering not only looks fab but is completely the sort of beauty that makes the stage where you need to take a LOT OF VERY IMPORTANT THINGS 😁 out with you, just that bit more bearable!

justabigdisco · 03/11/2021 23:29

It is comfortable despite the straps, but I will warn you that hardly any water bottles fit in the side pockets, they are all too big.

Scarby9 · 04/11/2021 02:16

@justabigdisco is right about the side bockets and water bottles - mine has to go inside.
Currently, I use the side pockets for clean (left) and dirty (right) face masks through the day.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/11/2021 02:51

No, not comfortable at all. I have mine away. I have Roka back packs and the straps are wider and much more comfortable.

Allium16 · 04/11/2021 05:17

I will check out Kipling, Roka, Cath Kidston and prob just head down to our local outdoors shop too so I can try some on. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@IAmTheLovechildOfYvesAndIsabel ha ha sorry!! They are very lovely looking aren't they? Pretty much every other parent I see is carrying one and I always think "oooooh now that looks fab in that colour...".

@Rugsofhonour

I’ve always used them as a day bag full of kids stuff. They’re really well designed because the whole front unzips so it’s very easy to find things buried at the bottom.

The straps aren’t padded but that’s never been a problem. The bags aren’t big enough to end up particularly heavy. If you’re worried you can buy padded attachments for the straps (at least you used to be able to).

The laptop version is great, with padded straps and an extra strong structured and zipped llaptop compartment (which can be used for anything). DC1 has one for school and can carry a tonne of stuff without it being uncomfortable.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/11/2021 06:52

Mine is comfortable, I hate big straps as they rub on my bra.
