Rocking horses, anyone got one?

Would like to spend a max. of £350 on a rocking horse for horse mad DD (nearly 4). Have looked at lots of websites and currently like the ones by Mamas and Papas. Does anyone have a rocking horse that they'd really recommend? R

Sounds like a lot for a rocking horse. My friend was given a really nice plain wooden one by her parents (for her ds) and she then had the face painted by a local artist. It looks great. But sorry, I don't know where it came from so i guess i'm not much help.

Rocking horses are great. Of course we have the Little Tikes £9.99 one which is bright green and looks nothing like a horse, but is loved by every child who walks in the door!

my neighbour just bought a real dartmoor pony for £100

SoupDragon · 16/10/2002 08:10

If you think £350 is a lot for a rocking horse, have a look at Rainbow Rocking horses

Of course, these a "proper" hand made horses, antiques of the future. I would LOVE one!

My ds has one which was just over £100 I think and a wooden one which he was given for Christmas, but they do have two real ones too

My mum always had a thing about buying her grandchildren a rocking horse (wish she'd buy a real one!) but we simply do not have the space in our cottage. In the end we found a lovely becch one which folds up. Think it was £40. that company who do the amazing chairs Stoke or something like that do a really interesting "rocker" which converts for babies right through to children. Its called the "Hippo" although it doesn't look like one but its a beautiful piece of furntinure. Think it was about £100.

Our local Toys R Us is selling the 2 of the Mamas and Papas rocking horses at half price. There is a larger one reduced to £149 pounds and a smaller one (for about a 3 year old I think) reduced from £200 to £99. They are beautiful, unfortunatly too big for DD otherwise I would have bought one. Hope this helps.

Rhiannon · 16/10/2002 13:19

Thanks all, I have been on the Mamas and Papas website and the horse in Toys R Us is similar to Brandy (same size but colour different). Brandy retails at M &P stores for £179.99 so the TRU price is a good one but not half price! Think I'll get it and put it away for Christmas. Thanks R.

Rhiannon -just intesrested in your cupboards! How will you put it away? We had to comandere a neighbours summer house when we bought DS a radio flyer red wagon last year. We weren't organised!

Rhiannon · 17/10/2002 17:08

Hi Katherine, it'll stay out all the time, we've got a big old Victorian house (thankfully).

Rhiannon I think Katherine was talking about hiding it until Christmas morning...

Bozza · 17/10/2002 17:15

No maybe I'm wrong. But out of interest what do you plan?

leese · 17/10/2002 18:28

kiddicare.com have some good offers on rocking horses - mamas and papas

Katherine · 17/10/2002 18:33

Yes Bozza I was referring to hiding it till Christmas.... and then there is the wrapping....

Rhiannon · 18/10/2002 18:26

It's for her birthday in a couple of weeks. Suppose it could go in the garage or I'm sure my neigh neigh neighbour (tee hee) would look after it for me. R

Rhiannon, I saw a lovely furry rocking horse in John Lewis yesterday. It was £295. Just in case your still looking.

ames · 21/10/2002 10:32

Rhiannon - i startibg to suspect that major retailers read these threads as since your first post rocking horses seem to be appearing in every shop I go into, the Co-op and Dunelm are yesterdays examples. Wouldn't be suprised to see a few turn up in my local newsagents!

pupuce · 21/10/2002 21:44

Got mine this WE at Ikea for 22£ and DD loves it !

Lollypop · 22/10/2002 19:20

Another thumbs up for the Ikea horse. DD loves it.

Lollypop · 22/10/2002 19:23

Oops just read first message. Ikea no good for a 4yr old. There was a feature on rocking horses in The Times on 13 Oct.(I think - check the web site)

WideWebWitch · 22/10/2002 20:19

Just looked at that rainbow rocking horse site soupdragon, blimey, they're gorgeous but so they should be at those prices!

Rhiannon · 25/10/2002 19:45

We spent over an hour in the traffic today driving to Watford to the Mamas and Papas shop. They have have about 10 rocking horses on display and Lightning was our favourite but at £199.99 isn't the cheapest as I checked kiddicare.com and they have it for £169.99. We tried to bargain with the shop but they wouldn't reduce their price unfortunately. R

Rhiannon. I was there today as well! If I'd known we could have had a coffee in Starbucks in Borders. I just love Borders, it reminds me of bookshops in America, I spent a fortune in there today.
