WestCountryLass · 09/12/2007 21:07

I knew the young were in the pouch but not that they live in there as a foetus type baby, amazing!!!

[smug] I knew this, and dd knows this - when she was 3 she asked me if a kangaroo was a mammal, which flummoxed me, because of the business of how it gives birth, but in actual fact, being a marsupial is a subset of being a mammal. Dd freaks random people out by telling them randomly that 'a kangaroo is a special sort of marsupial, called a mammal, it is a mammal because it doesn't lay eggs, and the baby drinks its mother's milk, the baby is born very small and climbs up its mummy's tummy to the pouch'.

She is a bit strange....

Lovely lovely video - dh has just gone all soppy over it!!!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2007 21:41

Awwww! I knew they grew in the pouch from being v undeveloped but I had no idea they had to get there themselves!

Thank goodness our children don't crawl back inside after the 9 months though...

suwoo · 09/12/2007 21:52

I had no idea that the little Kangaroo foetus crawls into the pouch itself, can't wait to show this to DD tomorrow. Thanks.

POOKAingwenceslaslookedout · 09/12/2007 22:02

I knew this, but still think it is amazing.
I love the way the joey just clambers out, and the mother with her small arms trying to help.
Also am amazed that it manages to get back in once it's out.

cazzybabs · 09/12/2007 22:07

Humm - then I watched some weird videos of women giving birth....I am now scared! (BTW I am 41 weeks pregnant!)

MarsyChristmas · 09/12/2007 22:13

So much is similar, though our babies tend to be 9 months when they crawl up our abdomens to breastfeed.

Thinking · 09/12/2007 22:20

Did you know that Kangeroo mums can tandem feed their babies ? The mum's two teats have seperate letdowns and produce different type and amount of milk depending on the babies needs. Now isn't that amazing.

Loved the video too

florenceuk · 09/12/2007 22:33

i knew this! but have never seen the video, very impressive.

Kevlarhead · 09/12/2007 23:24

Aren't placentas handy? Saving all that climbing...
