Does anyone tip their postman?

DD arrived in February and our postman has had a lot of extra letters and parcels to deliver as a consequence ! He's very friendly (whatever the weather, or size of parcel!). Does anyone tip their postman at Christmas and, if so, how much??

OP posts:
SlubbersRingAreYouListening · 07/12/2007 16:58

yes, £5 in a card, saying thank you.

NAB3littlemonkeys · 07/12/2007 16:58

Just heard that Royal Mail have found 2 sack loads of post that was for Christmas 2006....

Maidamess · 07/12/2007 16:58

I don't, but my brother is a Postie and gets loads of tips! Normally a fiver.

If my post was delivered sometime before 4pm , I may be a little more forthcoming in the tip department.

£20 for mine

but he does all sorts for us

inc finding us a cleaner

and he's always bringing parcels back at the end of his shift if i was out when he delivered

Maidamess · 07/12/2007 17:00

He sounds lovely!

expatinscotland · 07/12/2007 17:01

yes, and a box of chocolates.

claricebeansmum · 07/12/2007 17:01

Christmas card with £10 in it - it's an investment - signs for my parcels when I am out, comes back with stuff

THelesbellsRINGOUTFORCHRISTMAS · 07/12/2007 17:02

mine is great too, I give him a £10 in a card.

Hulababy · 07/12/2007 17:02

No. Service is so poor here and we seem to have a different postman/woman each week. No post till after 3:30pm, and then it doesn't appear to arrive every day anymore, seems to be a pattern of once every two days at the moment So, not impressed, never see them anyway to leave it for the, and wouldn't know which was "proper" person anyway.

Maidamess · 07/12/2007 17:03

OK, what about a milkman? Does he get a tip?

SlubbersRingAreYouListening · 07/12/2007 17:06

postie, paper boy, milk man all get a tip.

bin men get beer

claricebeansmum · 07/12/2007 17:11

Same as Slubber
Gifts for babysitters, cleaners etc - anyone for whom my life would be a mess without...

...so I guess I need to get you all a gift!

Desiderata · 07/12/2007 17:16

I'm going to give mine a tip this year. He reminds me of Eddy Murphy, but more so! He cracks me up every time I open the door.

That's got to be worth a tenner

crokky · 07/12/2007 17:18

FIL was a postman before he retired. He got lots of tips at Christmas - £5, £10 or box of chocs or bottle of something.

TheBlonde · 07/12/2007 17:22

I don't
Ours has trouble getting the post in the correct letter boxes

WHEELYbahhumBUG · 07/12/2007 17:23

I don't and I shan't be tipping the bin men this year either considering they should have picked up our rubbish yesterday and didn't. So, I phoned the council who said they'd send soemone today - and its still there. grrrrrr...

PestohohohoMonster · 07/12/2007 17:27

£5 in a card here. Our postman is great and also has to deal with all dh's business post, so he definitely deserves a bit of Christmas spirit

Brandnewchristmaspyjamasgirl · 07/12/2007 17:31

I think I will this year as our new postie seems very nice and after watching the street last night I may try and keep her sweet so she dosen't nick off with my parcels heheheh.

Flame · 07/12/2007 17:33

I won't be tipping my postman because we have had "issues", but I will be taking a box of biscuits and maltesers to the sorting office because they are lovely and I see them most days

stillaslowreader · 07/12/2007 18:15

Bottle of red because he is kind to rabbits and always shuts their gate.

gokfan · 07/12/2007 20:42

dp is a postie and hes had £39 in tips up to yet.Its always the older people and people who dont have much who tip.Hes been on his walk for 4.5yrs now so hes well known and liked. He always goes back with parcels etc.

And always delivers 1st class

squimlet · 07/12/2007 20:47

I havent done in previous years but will do this year. He earns his paypacket imo.
I always leave the milkman something though

Sidge · 07/12/2007 20:53

I thought I might give our postie a Christmas tip this year as he is fab.

He comes back if I'm doing the nursery run and he needs to leave a parcel as he knows how hard it is for me to get to the sorting office. Or he leaves it in a safe place with a little note.

He's great, our Dave the Postie!

moodlumtheHOHOhoodlum · 07/12/2007 20:57

I'm so pleased I found this thread to give me guidance on what I should be doing.

I'm now going to tip my postman £5 in a card and I'm going to give the lovely bin men some beer.

Brilliant. I love mumsnet and all the MN experts on the important things.
