I have an important meeting and easily become tearful. It's really important I hold it together this time. does anyone have any tips to stop this happening. Don't know why I am prone to this -have never seen my mum cry over anything.

I am the same!

I quit my job on Tuesday but knew I was going to and when my manager summoned me to a meeting I knew I had to be strong.

I swallowed a lot so that the emotion would stay down IYKWIM and bit my lip. Then, when I could take no more of her insults, I picked up my bag and flounced out and then BURST into tears in the car!!

Be brave and strong and think how proud you will feel if you manage not to break down.

You did well. Sorry about your job. How do you hold it together when you have to speak?

Yes. It's actually quite easy. I was taught this in a course at work (only thing from the many personal development courses my company ran that I ever remembered) and I've told lots of other people and it really does work. Practice beforehand by:

Look down, with shoulders hunched overand think of the saddest thing you can - doesn't matter if you start to become tearful at this bit. Gradually start to lift your chin, and raise your shoulders and roll your head back and look at the ceiling. As you do this, start thinking of seomthing wonderfully happy. You will probably also spontaneously smile. Repeat a few times. If you practice it, you will come to automatically associate looking up with positive emeotions, so that a quick glance at the ceiling is all it takes to stop you from crying

sip a glass of water - it really helps. When your voice starts to wobble, taking a pause to drink helps a lot. It makes you breathe differently and somehow that helps.

I'm a real cryer too

Well I let her do most of the talking and sat there taking her insults (which were not at all justified!)

When I picked up my bag to flounce and she told me to sit down (which I didnt) my voice became a little wobbly but the more I spoke the easier it became and then I flicked back my hair and did a proper flounce!!

I then sent in my resignation email letter!!
