We have very little money but I want to go away with dh during the holidays, ds will be with grandad. Is Whitstable fun in the evening? Can anyone recommend a cheap b&b? We would only stay for 2 nights...

Can't recommend a b+b but will say have oysters.

I would imagine it's fairly quiet in the evenings at this time of year, but I don;t really know....I think if I was you I might stay in Canterbury where there will be more going on in the evening, and perhaps spend a day there, and a day in Whitstable?

I am going to Whitstable this weekend for lunch as a birthday treat although in the rain by the look of it

Hmm! Whitstable aka Sleepy Hollow! I doubt there will be much going on at all tbh. There might be the odd pop-in-parlour Xmas bash on!

On the other hand, fabulous for fish and shell fish of the aphrodysiac (sp?) kind!

I second Canterbury. That'll be heaving with things to do, quiet studenty though.

trufaut - it depends on what you term fun. If you want wild and wanton then probably not the best place to go. It is expensive but there are some cheap b+Bs around that are value for money. There is one at the bottom of the hill when you come down, i think it is called oyster something or other. If you look it up it will be on Canterbury road (i think). My BIL stayed there and thought it was really good. The Hotel continental is nice but pricey pricey pricey, they do however do some good midweek deals.

For a night out you could try the bar on the beach, it is near the harbour and they have live music every friday and saturday night. There is usually a fee on the door. They serve local beer and its a bit expensive but for a decent night out i would wholly recommend it. The Neptune, also on the beach is a great pub, if you dont mind mingling with all sorts of weird and wonderful clientel. Can be a bit pretentious for my liking, a bit psuedo rough and ready and hippy, but its great for celeb spotting, if you like that sort of thing. Can be a bit cliquey, but the music is usually good and they do great beer. Can always sip your beer on the beach and watch the sun set.

Not sure about eating out, its all quite pricey and in my opinion overpriced. If you can get over to canterbury then you should try and get a table at the goods shed. Its not cheap but the food is amazing. It would probably cost about £70 for a three course meal with wine. Canterbury has loads of good places to eat, the goods shed would be a treat, all local produce and organic (hence the price) It is set in an old Goods shed, and is a farmers market during the day - sounds a bit common, its not, the food is A1.

Of course xmas parties might be a bit of a blight.

{envy] about the weekend away have fun.

Second the Neptume, LEM. Didn't realise we were neighbours!

Canterbury will be full of office parties/student revellers, you know the kind of thing. I live here, I know

Whits. is a little more, shall we say, sedate.

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 07/12/2007 20:51

Sedate! You need a walking frame to qualify for residency don't you!

lucyellensmum · 07/12/2007 21:45

Sedate or Classy!!! Now, what did i do with my zimmer frame!

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 08/12/2007 06:16

Ah, no I just meant Canterbury is a bit like this, well most of the bars at least...

I prefer a bit of sedate myself!
