Help - Ideas please for a book character costume

Ds,7, has to dress up as a book character for school next friday.

I'm useless at this sort of thing and would be grateful for any ideas anyone has.

Last year he dressed up as Harry Potter along with the majority of boys at school. This year i wanted to do something original but i can't think of anything yet.

I don't want to spend a fortune on an expensive costume just want to make something easy.

Does he have any favourite books to get you started thinking?

popmum · 10/11/2004 14:34

what about one of the mr men!?
mr bump with loads of bandages and blue clothes?
sherlock holmes? with cape and magnifying glass?

justmummy · 10/11/2004 14:34

Not really, he reads all sorts.

If i ask him he just comes back to Harry Potter again, but we must make the effort to do something different.

Mr bump was an idea i had last year. Thought it would be really good with lost of bandages, but he wasn't keen.

I'll have to mention that one again this year.

I love sherlock holmes suggestion as well.

Brilliant
Thanks

We have the same at our school on Friday.

My dd wants to go as Annie, but instead of wearing rags etc, she wants to wear a red chiffony party dress, not really quite the idea I don't think!!!!

tamum · 10/11/2004 14:41

I've mentioned this on here before, but ds went to his last one as Horrid Henry. He had a top wih a broad stripe across it, and I just gelled his hair to make it spiky and put red circles on his cheeks. He did say "Don't ever send me to school in blusher again!" but seemed unscathed. Might be worth considering?

binker · 10/11/2004 14:41

How about Slinky Malinky ? Ds went as him for Book Week - just a cat mask, collar made of ribbon and cardboard tag and a tail made with my French knitting thing out of black wool with a pipe cleaner in the end to make it stick up !

codswallop · 10/11/2004 14:41

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 14:46

James Bond (started as a book didn't it???)
Mowgli from Jungle Book (mind you, might be a bit chilly!)
A prince from one of the hundreds of Disney books
Aladdin
Woody from Toy Story book
Noddy - blue shorts, red sweater, yellow with red spots kneckerchiefm blue hat with bell

tamum · 10/11/2004 14:53

Hulababy, there are some really good ideas there and I hope you don't mind me teasing- but I think most 7 year old boys would rather go to school dressed as Barbie than Noddy!!!!

popmum · 10/11/2004 14:53

my daughter, who is 18 mths went as the witch from room on the broom to a halloween party - your DS is too old probably, but it was good fun, with a witches outfit, and broom complete with frog, cat, dog and bird all sewn/tied/taped on!

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 14:55

LOL! I know. I realised that afterwards when I re-read original message and realised he was 7!!! But I only have a bookcase full od 2.5yoDD's books to remind myself about. LOL

codswallop · 10/11/2004 14:56

codswallop · 10/11/2004 14:57

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 14:57

Is Robin Hood a book? He could have a bow and arrow, and wear some form of green outfit.

tamum · 10/11/2004 14:58

That's better Hulababy

Coddy, you're pretty keen on the Puss in Boots idea, eh?

Bumblelion · 10/11/2004 15:00

My son wore his halloween outfit (skeleton) and went as "Lazy Bones". Helped that we had a copy of the book indoors. Bit boring, but was not as common as the Harry Potters.

My eldest daughter went to her book days as one of the Jacqueline Wilson characters (her favourite books) - normal clothing but with a copy of the book in her hand. Easy but a bit of a cheat.

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 15:04

Robinson Crusoe
Frankenstein

Others:

  • Astronaut
  • Batman
  • Captain Scarlet
  • Cowboy
  • Doctor
  • Fireman
  • Harry Potter
  • Merlin The Wizard
  • Musketeers
  • Peter Pan
  • Pirate
  • Power Rangers
  • Racing Driver
  • Robin Hood
  • Spiderman
  • Superman

Any ideas from here?

codswallop · 10/11/2004 15:06

did I mention puss ion boots?

Aero · 10/11/2004 16:34

Last year ds1 went as Tintin! Dead easy to do - red trousers, creamy polo, blue jumper and a bit of hair gel! Only problem was, the teachers were the only ones who knew who he was dressed up as!!

Dingle · 10/11/2004 16:43

I made ds a Cat in the Hat costume last year, was really pleased with the finished result. Had great fun as I also made a few little props for him too.
He just wore black trousers and a long sleeved black t-shirt. Got some red & white felt from local craft shop, made a big bow and sewes it to the front of his t-shirt, a long black tail, attached to his belt, the hat was a bit trickier, measured round his head & in Blue Peter style drew round lagre circular objects to get the brim (did look a bit like a traffic cone, but you get the idea.
Made a little fan and even a goldfish, in a bowl out of some plastic wrapping.

My dd went as the white rabbit which was really easy. White clothes, pom pom tail, facepaint whiskers and black nose, rabbit ears on a hairband from Claire's Accessories, and my wonderful charity shop find which was a red velvet waistcoat. Oh, and a toy watch on a chain lent by a friend but could have made a cardboard one.

As luck would have it someone in her class turned up as the Mad Hatter so we got a lovely photo of them both!
