what do you do when your tall, skinny child is too tall for a Group 1 care seat, but not heavy enough for a Group 2 one?

so, is it more dangerous for him to be in the smaller one, with his head sticking above the top of the seat, or for him to be a kg or so too light for the next group up?

(he's only 2.5yo, but over a meter tall)

DS1 is 1m tall. He is 3 in 2 weeks time., His head is way over the top of the car seat, but if we wer to crash, there is the headreast on the seat behind him.

I was wondering about this myslef this morning

I got a britax car seat which goes from a stage one right up to age 12 - I think it is called the evolva or similar.

ggirlsbells · 04/12/2007 13:47

I think you get seat to cater to their height firstly.

LadyMuck · 04/12/2007 13:47

There are effectively 3 criteria for the next car seat (age, height and weight) and I understand that they move to the next car seat once they fulfil 2 out of the 3 criteria.

Tutter · 04/12/2007 14:08

IGW - i just spoke with britax customer services and they say that it's ok for the top of the child's head to be above the top[ of the seat - they must move to a bigger seat once their eye-line is above the top of the seat

I understood that the straps should be parallel or above the child's shoulder line - DS certainly managed to escape from his straps when they were in a lower position on his current car seat.

I don't think that DS will reach the two out of three criteria for some time, but his back will be too long/tall for it fairly shortly. No idea what I'm going to do then.

I would think a seat that is a stage 2/3 combination, so, like a boosterseat with a back that has got an integrated harness....if that makes sense at all, would be your best bet!

TellusMater · 04/12/2007 15:52

We had the same problem, and bought a 123 seat (the Evolva Ultra, but there are others). Still a 5 point harness, but bigger.

Chopster · 04/12/2007 15:56

its dangerous to have a head overhanding, though until that happens you do cater to weight. I agree with 3andnomore. Mine boys have now got the nania group 1/2/3 ones, which are suitable from 9mnths as they have an integral harness but are basically a high backed booster which then becomes jsut a booster cushion. I'll see if I can find a link.

this is the sort of thing we have. We bought it as an upgrade fromt he stage 1, mainly because they are so much lighter for taking on holiday.
