My 4 year old tested positive for covid 4/5 weeks ago along with the rest of the household. He has woken yesterday with a bit of a sniffy and runny nose but no temp or cough. Does he need tested for the runny nose? Surely he couldnt have it again so soon from the last which was only weeks ago? I dont know what to do

I would say no need to test. We have had similar situation recently with teen ds. He had covid and then a mild cold about a month later. With covid he had high temperature and all the classic symptoms including loss of taste and smell. The cold he had a month later was literally a bit of a stuffy nose and a scratchy throat. He kept away from others and stayed at home until it had passed (just incase) but didn't test because it would be inaccurate as well within the 90 days.

I just hate to put him through unnecessary tests as he has been tested so many times as he also had covid last year in October and has been tested since then for temps etc

Had my ds developed a temperature i would have got advice before testing again so soon. Not because of the test, although I can understand young children find it unpleasant) but because the results could be inaccurate and you don't want to isolate unnecessarily. Honestly I wouldn't test for a runny nose with no other symptoms. We have all lost our ability to risk assess. He has literally just had covid and now has a minor symptom which isn't even one of the main symptoms of covid. I'm sure others will be along in a moment to say "well i just had an achey left elbow and tested positive" which is just so unhelpful. Yes runny nose can be a symptom but unlikely on it's own and when you add in that he has just had it the likely hood reduces even further.
