DH crashed the car on Tuesday - he hit a wooden post & up a bank, down a bank & into a field

One wheel was at 90 degrees to the car

The breakdown truck took over an hour to get it onto the truck because of the broken wheel

Everyone who has seem it thinks it would be written off (breakdown man, man who delivered courtesy car, man who stopped at accident(works in garage))

Insurance co is saying it isn't too bad & they are going to fix it

Does this make sense?

Should I be worried about driving a damaged/fixed car?

BTW I am an avid green & I don't go round throwing away/disposing of things lightly

If they fix it, it will have to be fixed to a certain standard - I wouldn't worry about the safety aspect. I did something similar many years ago, I moved out of the way of an oncoming car on a narrow country road, but managed to drive into a tree stump in the process, forcing the wheel out. It was fixed, and I never had any issues with it.

Really - I do worry about cars and safety

Glad you were OK

I have to say I do prefer it when they write them off because I always feel that once a car's been in an accident, things just start going wrong (like the big jolt has shaken everything loose, if that makes sense)

If you are worried about it, why not ask them for a second opinion, maybe get another garage to look at it?

Meant to say as well - hope your DH was Ok. It sounds like a pretty dramatic crash!

It was - DD & her BF were in the car (both 10) & both are bruised (shoulder)

I bashed up my car last year, didn't think it looked too bad, just wing and headlight. As it was an old car (and beautiful ) the insurance company said it was an economic write-off. I spoke to the man who did the assessment on it and told him that I would like to buy it back and get it repaired and he said "my advice is Don't" because the wheel had been knocked slightly out of line. At the time I was upset because I loved the car but now I'm glad I took his advice because it would have been a worry at the back of my mind.

Insurance companies aren't usually that keen on fixing cars if it is cheaper to write them off. Tehy seem to like writing them off when they are fixable. Also they will have to fix it to legal safety standards.

On that basis I would let them fix car and carry on using it.

If you are really worried then get 2nd opinion on the car.

Thanks for the reassurances
