Oh MY GOD!!!!!!
I had all my christmas pressies for EVERYONE all wrapped up ready in the garage. I've done this every year, but this year the FUC**NG water pipes have burst and absolutely soaked everything.
I don't know when it happened, I am so and sad at the same time!!

There is hundreds of pounds of stuff in there - all no good now. I am SO upset, not only cos of the money spent, but all the time and effort i've put into getting all the stuff over the last 6 months. I am gutted, devastated and I need LOTS of hugs please xxxxxx

Emzzz how awful, have you got insurance?

Wallace · 29/11/2007 16:13

oh no! what a disaster! for you. Lots of hugs xxxxxx

Tanee58 · 29/11/2007 16:13

{{{{{{}}}}}} oh that's awful! Is anything recoverable? Will your insurance cover? I'm sure everyone will understand.

sugar34plum · 29/11/2007 16:13

oh my god!!! So for you. dont know what to say but {{{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

NorthernLurker · 29/11/2007 16:13

oh that's awful - can you claim on your insurance? Surely some things can be salvaged? Can anybody come round to help you out? Could you replace stuff on-line?

emzzzzz · 29/11/2007 16:14

Yes, but they are saying the garage isn't covered. It's attached to the house though, with a door from the utility to the garage, it's carpeted, so we class it as another room! I'm so bloody annoyed and upset.

franke · 29/11/2007 16:14

I was also going to ask if you have insurance.

Are you sure they are all ruined - could some of them just be dried out slowly?

Poor you - what rubbish luck.

emzzzzz · 29/11/2007 16:18

I've got to go through it all, we buy mostly for kids, so I could just go to Argos and get it all done in one go, but we haven't got the money really. It's a bloody nightmare. We are arguing with the insurance - hopefully they will stump up!!

OP posts:
Buda · 29/11/2007 16:21

Of course it is part of the house! Bloody insurance companies.

Poor you. Try and dry it all out and salvage as much as you can.

talktothebees · 29/11/2007 16:57

emzzz your local CAB might be able to help you make your insurance company see sense. Or you can take your complaint to the financial ombudsman.

needmorecoffee · 29/11/2007 17:00

I'm so sorry. Thats awful.
Have you managed to save anything?

emzzzzz · 29/11/2007 17:23

There's a couple of bits I've saved so far - they're toys, and just the packaging is damaged, so I will just re wrap them as they are. I'm sure no-one will mind. It's tough shit if they do!!!!!!!

OP posts:
pippo · 29/11/2007 17:25

oh really sorry, thats awful, very sad for you.

Wisteria · 29/11/2007 17:25

Definitely get some advice about that from someone; ours is covered and sounds like yours in that it's attached to the house.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}

Hope someone can help out xx

mamafraise · 29/11/2007 17:39

How awful for you.

Would things be covered if you bought them on plastic?

needmorecoffee · 29/11/2007 17:45

I really feel for you. We moved into a rented house so most of our boxes were stacked the the garage. Like yours it had a door that openend into the house. During a downpour the water came down the slopey street and into the garage and filled it to nearly a foot.
I think I just stood there and cried.
We saved everything that could be dried out though.

PestoMonster · 29/11/2007 17:47

What you must do is check your policy carefully. You need to find out whether your contents are only covered when they are in your home and then what the policy defines as your home. Having said that, usually your contents are covered even when they are not in the home, eg bicycles
Once you have checked your policy document thoroughly, ring them again.
Good luck.

EmsMum · 29/11/2007 17:51

Oh yes def check if they were bought on credit card.

Now is everyone scared shitless about what they've got in their garages and whether its covered? I think I'll get DH to check ours... I'm sure it ought to be.

franke · 29/11/2007 17:52

On the bright side - think how much easier Christmas Day will be without all that blasted packaging around the toys you've salvaged . Hope you find a few more things you can save.

kd73 · 29/11/2007 18:06

I work in Insurance claims and not sure why you wouldn't be covered

Please check out the definitions of the "building" in your policy booklet not sure why the garage would not be included, but certainly you should be covered for escape of water from fixed water apparatus as its pretty standard under most policies.

I am not really not sure with the information you have been given on this one - go back and speak to a manager and check this out.

PS be nice - we hate being shouted at and would prefer to be helpful!!!!!!!!!

HappyMummyOfOne · 29/11/2007 19:37

Dig your policy booklet out or post the insurers name so the T&C's can be looked at.

Some insurers limit contents in outbuildings (garges/sheds etc) and some dont offer cover - they all vary.

Personal effects cover is an optional extra for contents outside the home so do you have this?

emzzzzz · 29/11/2007 19:40

YIPPPPEEEEEE YIPPPPEEEEE
DH has spoken to nice insurance man on the phone, and we ARE covered!!!!
Apparently I spoke to a trainee, who gave me wrong info!!!
I am SO relieved, but I'm now worried that I haven't got time to shop for them all again!
It's a good job I like shopping

Thanks for all your advice xxxxx

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 29/11/2007 19:49

biglips · 29/11/2007 19:51

Alliebongo · 29/11/2007 19:51
