Any tips on how to get rid of the smell of cat pee please?

My cat (19 years old this month) has been diagnosed with senile dementia. She is fine in herself but does not always pee in her box. She uses the hall floor (tiled, thankfully) instead. Does anyone have any tips for stopping the house smelling like a pussy's pissoir when you walk in? Obviously, I am washing the floor every day, but I think you can still smell it, even when it has been cleaned.

I think bicarbonate of soda or baking powder is supposed to do the trick Tanzie, but I am not sure which one. Or how you use it on a floor.
Not much help then am I?

Hiya - have to say, it is really really difficult as it is so greasy it's hard to completely shift. We had our two neutered to stop them doing it which made it smell a bit less but it's still there. Try using a lemon when cleaning it, I found that helps a bit and also puts them off a bit!!

Agree with zephyrcat, use something citrus in the cleaning water (orange is brilliant).

But whatever you do - don't use any cleaning product with ammonia in. Even if you can't smell it, the cat can and will keep going back to the same spot.

Biological washing liquid

Also if you have a space that cats keep going to to wee put TIN FOIL there and they don't walk on it we did it with our cats and it works

friends thought it a bit mad though

To prevent the lingering smells in a carpet, clean up what you can, then generously sprinkle the remaining spot with baking soda. Scrub gently, from the outside toward the center, with a stiff brush or sponge dipped repeatedly in clean water (test for colorfastness!). Blot up the moisture with paper towels. Leave a last small layer of baking soda powder sprinkled on the spot and vacuum it later when the carpet is dry.
Repeat this several times - No more smells!!
For general deodorizing, sprinkle baking soda on carpeting monthly, or as needed, before going to bed and let it set overnight. Vacuum the next day.

Home-made carpet deodorizer recipe:
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
15 drops of your favorite essential oil fragrance.

Thanks everyone. I'll clean the floor with bio washing powder from now on. Can I use Ariel Tablets crushed? Think Monsieur Propre (clearly the figment of someone's imagination!) contains ammonia, so that probably doesn't help.

after thouroughly cleaning the are with soapy water (as advised earlier from the other posts) rinse with a solution of vinegar (vinegar diluted in water) and dry. It neutralises the odour and prevents the cat or dog going back to the same spot. Must warn you vinegar stinks (no nicer way of putting it!) but it smells better than cat pee. And the smell goes away after a while.
