My dh was driving at 70mph on a motorway this evening with the two kids in the back and he hit a deer!!!!
Dh was in the slow lane and it leapt across the central reservation and three lanes of traffic in the dark and rain. The front and side of the car were seriously damaged, but dh and the kids are totally fine. Unfortunately the deer was not. Police said it happens all the time on that road. I'm just so glad that dh was in his big tall bulky toyota landcruiser instead of in my teensy politically correct car...he might not be alive if he'd been in the latter.

He was bloody lucky. Someone has just been killed at the top of our road from swerving to avoid a deer. My dp always tells me that if anything runs out you just have to hit it so you dont hit anything else - bit harsh but obviously true!! Glad they are all ok though

Glad they are all right. Very scary for all of you. Hope you are both relaxing tonight.

If it happens all the time then surely the speed limit should be lowered- not having a go at you but at the police/council/whoever sets speed limits. As you said that could have been more serious if they'd been in a smaller car

Yeah. It was a newish motorway in essex. He was just coming back from visiting his kids. They should at least have had signs. Dh said that he made a split secon decision to not swerve and hit it instead. I'm so glad he did as he could have been spinning out of control instead.

What a relief, SA. So glad they are all ok.

God, Sofia, poor DH, what an awful decision to have to make. Glad he made the right one - glad he and kids are OK - glad they were in a big car.

Very scary indeed, thank goodness everyone was ok. There ought to be warning signs or lighting to deter the deer.

We had this happen to us almost exactly 4 years ago in Yorks. Following friends through lanes to their house at dusk, hit the deer and were pretty much marooned - no phone, no houses nearby, friends driven off ahead... Fortunately we were able to limp on, somehow. Our Rover 's front end was pretty much gone but fortunately it didn't go through the windscreen. I still tense when driving in similar conditions.
