How much is the very, very maximum you would think was just about OK for a poncey baker to charge for a loaf of bread...

Where on Earth do they get the idea that these prices are remotely competative, and another point ...

Isn't it a bit gauche to boast about the cost of something you have bought? So you would be landed with a nice loaf of bread, and no boasting allowed - nobody would know you forked out £13.65 a loaf!

I can just picture frenzied Society Ladies scurrying around their 'Kitchen supper' table, twittering "Chew it! Chew it!"

lily - Poilane, thank you for reminding me.

Colditz - perhaps the loaves come with an embossed price tag which your frenzied society ladies could leave on to display their high standards!

I'm not surprised . I sometimes have to buy bread from Paul (the ponce boulangerie not the random person that I'm talking about as if we all know him) and it's all 4 quid and upwards. And is inedible due to extreme chewiness. (I only buy it when I've forgotten to go to Sainsbury's at lunchtime and have to get something on the way home {self justification smiley})

I'm in London and rapidly turning into a pensioner with all my "how much?" moaning. Went out for a coffee last week with a colleague and paid 9 quid for two coffees I work in Mayfair where hedge fund managers are throwing so much cash around that everything is literally twice the price it should be - minimum spend to reserve a sofa in a reasonably nice bar round here - 4000 quid!!! For just an ordinary sofa on a week night. Gordon bennett.

Our local farm shop sells muffins that are £1.25 each. DH picked up a pack of 4 and nearly fell over when the shop guy said 'That's £5 please'. Needless to say, he didn't buy them.
