This one was for you....
Heartbroken.
Such a powerful word, and yet it wasn’t enough.
There was a word to accurately describe just how Cassie felt, so heartbroken would have to suffice.
After her first big game in charge, a win by all accounts, she had received devastating news. Two pieces of devastating news.
She received a call from her mother to say her beloved paternal grandmother had suffered a catastrophic stroke and it didn’t look good. Cassie made it to the hospital, crushed at the sight of her vivacious grandmother looked deathly pale, frail and still.
Along with the rest of the family, Cassie stayed by her side and clutching her hand. Cassie sang to her, as it was something her grandmother enjoyed. Her father had taken the hard decision of turning off her life support and at 11.11pm, she passed away.
That was devastating enough, but her heart broke even more when at 12.37am, she had a call from her former sister in law to say that her second ex husband had been found dead. He had sadly taken his own life, devastating people who knew him.
Even though he and Cassie had divorced, they still cared a great deal for each other. Love and affection was still there, they just couldn’t make their marriage work because of her exes addictions.
She was broken by the time she got to St George’s Park. She just couldn’t face anyone, couldn’t let people she her crumble and she knew that she would. Fortunately, the coaches knew and told the players.
She stayed in bed all day, completely unable to function properly. She would be able to hold it together for the following day, but today she needed to cry and sleep.
It wasn’t until midnight that she went in search of the gym, desperately wanting to burn away some negative feelings. On her way to the gym she bumped into Stones, and she barely managed to hold onto her tears. “Pebbles, you’re up late.”
“Didn’t feel tired, so I got in some extra training.” Stones frowned as he could see the tears forming in his manager’s eyes. “Are you ok?”
“Not really, Pebbles. I was on top of the world a few hours ago, and now I don’t know how to feel.” Just like that, what she feared came true and she just burst into tears. She felt like an idiot in front of Stones, and she hated people seeing her cry. She rarely cried and she hated it when she did.
Despite that, she allowed him to wrap his arms around her. He was taller than her, so she was wrapped up into his embrace. “I’m so sorry, boss.”
Cassie pulled away, quickly wiping her tears away. “Don’t tell anyone I cried. I hate people seeing my cry. I’m an ugly crier.”
“Don’t worry, you look as beautiful as always.”
There was a moment when Cassie saw fear in his eyes, worried he went too far but she just laughed. “Somewhere, my grandmother is giggling like a school girl at that.”
“I’m sure she would rather see you laughing.” Suddenly it struck Cassie just how attractive he was. Why did she do this to herself? First she had a fling with Jack, which was obviously over as he now avoided her if he possibly could and now she had her sights set on another handsome and fit young man. “So, beautiful am I?”
“You clearly don’t look in the mirror, if you have to question that.”
“I get told that a lot, but I always wonder what they actually mean.”
“Beautiful eyes, smile, laugh……”
“…..intelligence, wit and so generous?” Cassie grinned.
“That’s right.”
Cassie stilled as he approached with a determined look in his eyes. He was going to kiss her, and she wanted him to. Forget Jack and his cowardly behaviour and fuck the rules. She wanted to forget her pain, even if briefly.
She closed her eyes as his lips connected with hers, and she wasn’t sure if she should respond in kind, but her heart overruled her head. As his tongue teased her mouth open, strong arms wrapped around her.
He was a gentle kisser, strong yet tender. It had been a long time since she had just been kissed. It always ended up with clothes being taken off, but he seemed content to just kiss her, and it was like a balm her broken soul.
They had gotten lost in each other, and it was only when a door opened that they pulled apart. Cassie stood frozen; eyes wide as she caught sight of Jack standing there with balled up fists.
Cassie Cavendish fucks up again…..
