Halogen bulbs - probably a silly question!

If halogen bulbs are being banned shortly, does that mean the light fittings need to be replaced or is there an alternative light bulb that will fit?

I am aware I am probably being extremely… dim Grin

There are alternative bulbs that use LEDs that will fit in the same fittings.
Halogen bulbs are really inefficient. We used to have them in our kitchen and I could literally feel them grilling my scalp when I walked underneath them (I've got very short hair.)

Ah okay thank you, I was worried about all the fittings needing to be replaced!

Check that LEDs will fit, if not just buy some halogen ones in, they are only banned from sale, you can still use the ones you have.

We replaced some of our halogens with LEDs but in one of the fittings, they strobe.

So now I am looking for a new track light (for a long narrow study, if anyone has any suggestions).

I did see one story which said the pin halogen (often thenlottle spotlights) replacement leds might in some set ups cause flickering which would need an electrician. Otherwise alternatives are readily available.
I really really wish my life had not coincided with all the changes to lightbulbs. Never thkight id say that but there we go.

I nearly posted about a light bulb problem that I literally can't sort

I hate that you need so much knowledge and also that electricals can be made so badly.

I have just stocked up on halogen bulbs for my living room light fittings, as LEDs are absolutely useless in them and go out after a few minutes. They say LEDs are more value for money but clearly that is not my experience!

Well I have a running battle with dimmable bulbs. Cant bear it. Have fuses gone in brand new lamps. Bulbs which certainly do NOT dim despite saying they do. Replacement lamps. I am absolutely sick of it - May go live in a cold dark cave.

Ostara212 · 11/06/2021 18:26

So glad it's not me

The lights are gone in the loo, the fluorescent bulbs are jammed in so .i can't get them out, and apparently this is common.

It's tempting to just use a battery operated lamp in there. I have three for camping! I suspect it would save money and aggravation!

Ha ha well I have a bathroom mirror light fitting where the transformer bit is making such an awful whine even when light is off I have done just that. Fitting unwired. I have a hands free battery operated stick on light fitting and it’s doing the job until I get an electrician in to do something.
Magnetic and self adhesive or motion sensor (Ooer that’s quite funny) etc lights are rather brilliant stop gaps.

Good luck !
