Learning to drive

I'm 35 with a one year old son and i've never learned to drive so far. My husband doesn't drive either and i'm thinking of learning. I'm a SAHM so it seems to be a good time. I want to be able to drive my son and expand the things we can do. I also want to be drive and help my parents.

One reason i haven't learned is that I'm a bit scared of driving what i consider something dangerous (i am a bit scared of being responsible for other people's safely).

I don't have any idea how to start! Any tips on that?

I’m surprised no one has answered this!

I know exactly how you feel. I was excited to start learning to drive then I had an awful driving instructor which really knocked my confidence leading me to stop learning to driving (please don’t do this if this happens to you — just find another instructor). It took me circa a year to build the courage to learn again!

No need to be scared of your car. You will have a qualified instructor in your car watching your every move and will make sure you don’t get yourself in an accident. Your initial lessons won’t be anything that involves speeds that will kill someone or puts you in a position of other’s safety to consider. Let your instructor worry about that for now. Most people feel the same way you do when starting off their driving lessons but the anxiety soon dissipates once they’re in the car and setting off.

Tips:
Go onto Facebook (if you’re on it) and look at driving instructors based in your area. I never went to a big driving school as independent driving instructors seem to have a better reputation. If you’re in the Solihull/Birmingham/Warwickshire/Worcestershire area - I can recommend you my instructor! He was fab and I passed with him first time!

It’s ok to not get on with your instructor. I didn’t get on with two of my instructors and finally found one who I really gelled with. Remember, you’re their boss and if you’re not happy with them, simply go elsewhere.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself if you make mistakes during your lessons. It’s better to make mistakes when you’re learning than when you pass! Also you’re meant to make mistakes when learning.

Try and get private practice outside of lessons. If not possible - get two lessons a week if your finances allow that. I felt like one lesson a week wasn’t enough.

I would start revising for your theory now and book your theory test once you’ve found an instructor. Aim to pass your theory before your first lesson. You’ll pick up quite a few things regarding your theory once you start your lessons however you don’t know how fast you’ll learn to drive so I would try and get it out of the way with.
It lasts two years from the day you pass your theory and won’t have to worry about it if your instructor says you’re test ready but haven’t done passed your theory! The waiting list for driving tests are astronomical right now due to lockdowns and covid so it could be a long time before you get your practical driving test so get your theory out of the way with.

I’m happy to help if you have anymore questions Smile. Good luck OP.
Passing my driving test to this day was the greatest day of my life and has really changed my life. I couldn’t imagine my life now without my car.

Thank you so much! I Grin

didn't even notice i had a response until now. Thats really given me some food for thought! Alas, I'm in London so i can't use the same instructor.

I've started revising for the theory. I hadn't thought about facebook for instructors. Thats a really great idea!
