Anyone else get an evening of sickening angst, nervousness, borderline depression and anxiety laden gloom when they had a drink the night before?

I didn't drink very much, but I did have several shots of vodka, and I am noticing that I get this dreadful feeling after a night of vodka drinking, but not so much with other drinks.

I woke without a hangover, but without fail, by roughly 5pm I have started to ... brood, I suppose the word is.

What is causing this? Why is it happening?

Ah, its a horrible mix of physiology and psychology, and is very individual. Drinkers often/usually get a mid-afternoon demise when bodies are very vulnerable to demands, incl. emotional ones. It didn't happen when you were younger as you, in comparison were more carefree, and your body was "fitter" and more capable.
Alcohol removes some vitamins from your body, and destroys Vit C. That, combined with the depression of the central nervous system that the poison ethyl alcohol is, can leave people weepy, anxious and feeling that even routine is all too much.

'feeling that even routine is too much'

That's it exactly. Usually am multi tasking nutter (no choice with dh away,f/t job and two children) but post drinking bout, even getting breakfast on the table does me in.

I don't drink spirits for this reason. Tequila was ALWAYS guaranteed to leave me in tears. White spirits were the worst for some reason - gin, vodka white rum, tequilla. All left me an emotional wreck. So I switched to cider which just left me a physical wreck. 7 pints a night & up for my 9am lecture... Those were the days! Now it is a glass or two of red wine and in bed by 9.30pm.....

Vodka has the same effect on me - after one glass of vodka and orange, not even enough to get drunk. That's why I don't drink it.

I'm perfectly OK on wine and beer (not mixed, obviously). I had been planning to have the tequila at the meet-up - is that a bad idea for those afflicted by vodka depression? Had I better stick to something that I know agrees with me?

I've given up gin because even a couple seemed to make me really spooked the next day. I stick to the odd glass of wine now and feel heaps better for it. I had a nasty experience with vodka at 17 and haven't touched the stuff since (I'm 39...)

Me too Piggy.... Gin makes me want to cry!
