Flaming bloody Americanisation. That's what it is.

Furball · 14/11/2007 13:22

Not american but -

1st year of school is reception year 1 is the 2nd year [double]

god knows what year 12 means in old fashioned terms.

bring back years 1-3 infants 1-4 juniors 1-5 seniors, easy peasy

One of my current bugbears is that suddenly we 'trial' things instead of 'testing' them.

Tinker · 14/11/2007 13:26

Yes, school years stil confuse me. Have to start at reception and work my way up each time. 4th year Juniors so much clearer.

But nursery is a bit different from pre-school though in that pre-school is attached to the school. But not going to fight about it.

Furball · 14/11/2007 13:26

bloody americans! - george bush said the french don't have a word for entrepreneur

pukkapatch · 14/11/2007 13:26

too much american influence

pukkapatch · 14/11/2007 13:27

year 12 is lower sixth

My2Weegirls · 14/11/2007 13:36

i'd never heard of reception till i came on mumsnet! don't think it's ever used up here (central scotland) i had visions of all these children standing in a big hall with a receptionist on the phone.

we had and still have primary's 1-7 and high has always been high school!

day care seems to be creeping in instead of nursery.

Sort of along the same lines, I worked in a hotel, 103 bedrooms, knew it like the back of my hand, then some idiot decided it would be a good idea to change all the room numbers

Tinker · 14/11/2007 13:41

Yes, my mum was a reception teacher - that was the 70s

totaleclipse · 14/11/2007 13:41

oh, so whats 5th form called then?

totaleclipse · 14/11/2007 13:41

we had primary 1-7, high school, and at the same school 5th and 6th years (staying on cause they want to do Highers or sys)
it was easy peasy

starting from scratch here in this strange land england

HairyIrene · 14/11/2007 13:54

nursery learning through play
