Who's had an extension done on their house?

I am daydreaming about relocating our kitchen within our (stonebuilt, Victorian) house. Would need to extend slightly to get the best result: a sort of galley kitchen with skylight leading to small sunroom/conservatory would be the thing. Might need tiny loo shoehorned in there too. Would give us big extra bedroom but wondering if it's worth the upheaval. Has anyone got experience of this sort of work they can share? Don't have a clue how much it might be either, but a bit of inheritance money might make it a possibility...maybe...Would really appreciate tales of or

We had an extension built 4 years ago, comprising an extra bedroom, bathroom, and downstairs two rooms plus loo and little laundry area. We also had our existing kitchen and bathroom stripped out and new appliances plumbed in, the whole house rewired and a new combi boiler. We didn't have any tiling or decorating done bacause I do that. The whole thing cost about £30,000 and took about 8 weeks to do.

made our kitchen twice the size by getting rid of wooden lean-to and moving sink over to a new corner, now have doors which lead out into garden and have enough room for proper table for us all to eat at. only extended by less than 2m but made a big difference. cost about £12k including all new kitchen, sink and extractor fan. well worth it. if i did it again the only thing i'd change would be to double glaze it.

spots, we had an extension done last year (on our Victorian terrace). We turned the upstairs bathroom into a third bedroom, extended the kitchen downstairs and added a bathroom at the back. Email me if you want to know more/have specific questions!

well we've just had tenders in for doing our extension - 2 storeys at the side and a kitchen extension and with VAT and fees they have come in at around £180,000

We've had our planning permission refused for an extension on our 1860's terraced house - it would apparently spoil the visual amenity of the area. Tosh!!!!

The plans and applications cost us around £400 and 8 months heartache. A 2 storey garage and bedroom over would have cost around £30,000 here in West Yorkshire.

We've just finished our extension. 2 storey side extension (went out about 6 ft at bottom and then extended over that and the garage) and single storey rear extension (27 x 10), plus cheap & cheerful loft conversion (already had velux & dormer so just put in space saver staircase and strengthened floor, plus all insulation & plastering). Total cost from builder was approx 80k + vat, that includes all electricals, new plumbing throughout (ripped out all existing heaqting system & replaced, plumbed in 2 new bathrooms etc), but no decorating. Doesn't include kitchen as we got someone else to make that. We did have some much higher quotes (120k). Only asked recommended builders to quote, and went for larger firms rather than 'one man bands' as size of work meant would have taken ages otherwise. Very happy with both the quality of the work & the price, just slightly fed up now with the amount of painting we've got to do. Had to wait 6 months for the builders though, good ones are always busy.

had an architect round to give advice on loft conversion plus 2 storey extension and moving bathroom upstairs in 2 bed Victorian terrace. her (free) advice was that it simply wasn't worth the money, given tiny narrow house, no direct access and limits on what a 3 bed house would fetch. she thought that we wouldn't get anything, even just a loft conversion, under 30,000 and we might be looking up towards 80,000 or more for the full thing.
